Fuel tank wisdom needed

I've been looking for an oversized fuel tank for my '08 FE550 for some time now. I've also been hoping to find an under-seat tank as well but that's not the point of this post.

Found a guy on Craigslist claiming that the 5 gallon tank he had on his KTM 525 will fit Husabergs and Husqvarnas as well. Looking at the photo in the ad, it appears to be the correct tank for an '00 to '08 Husaberg. However, I was not aware that the large Husaberg tanks would fit anything other than Husabergs. Is this right? I also recall that the fuel capacity was closer to 4 gallons than 5.

So, is the Craigslist guy on crack or is this truly a 5 gallon tank that will fit my bike? I don't want to let this opportunity slip by if it's legit.

There's no way the Husaberg big tank would fit on another brand, at least as a bolt right on. It was molded to fit around the in-frame air filter, which neither KTM or Husqy had.

You could tell right away if it is a Husaberg tank. Post the link or a picture.

Yeah...but the guy claiming that he had it on his KTM shakes my confidence.

Can anyone confirm that the Clarke tank was 5 gallons? A check of their websight (AGAIN) shows nothing in production for Husabergs so they've obviously stopped making this tank. Bozarth shows it out of production as well, as does justgastanks. This is why I feel that they were all made by the same company. All of the sources dried up at exactly the same time.

Ask him to send more pictures Mine has Clarke 1478 stamped on the bottom side under the filler neck

Look for
1)location of petcocks
2) vent holes & holes for attaching to rads
3) Pin for attaching seat etc

Here are some pictures to compare

Thanks for the help Frank. I think I'll have a buddy in Vegas swing by and compare to your pics. If it's the same tank, I'll pull the trigger. 5 gallons is a little more than I really wanted (4 would be perfect) but I'll take it anyway.

I'm racing this bike in Vegas to Reno this year and might want a little more range than the stock 2.8 gets me.

Well, I pulled the trigger on it. Had my buddy swing by and look at it. There was 1478 stamped in the tank and it matched the photos. Still don't know the story with him using it on a KTM...

Thanks to the wisdom of the UHE I now have a big tank for my 'Berg!!!

Thanks Berger! At 4 gallons it should be a good option for the race. I put together a preliminary pit strategy for V to R and it has two legs that are 72 miles in length and that's a real stretch for the stock 2.8 gallons. I was afraid that the tank was 5 gallons as advertised and would feel huge and cumbersome. Four gallons should be ok.
