New Carb needed

I've been searching the threads on here and it seems the consensus that the stock Dellorto carbs are no good. I've got a 97' FE400 which has had carb problems since i bought it a year ago. I've tried lowering and raising the needle and adjusting the idle and mixture screws to no avail. This is of course after a thorough cleaning. The problem is that I cannot keep the throttle on and go a steady speed without the bike wanting to lunge ahead or fall back - basically the jitters. However, during acceleration there does not seem to be any problem - ie - bike does not lurch but steadily gains speed. I am thinking instead of replacing needles, floats and what not I should just buy a used lectron 38 for under $100 U.S. - problem solved. Any thoughts?
p.s. working on bikes is pretty new to me. I know how to change the oil,spark plugs, and replace parts but tuning is beyond me.

Your problem sounds more like an air leak than a carb jetting problem. Check for cracks in your intake manifold and the air boot and for loose clamps on both ends of the carb. I have owned 2 Husabergs with Dellorto carbs and never experienced anything like this. Another possible issue is that the slide may be worn and that is much cheaper than a replacement carb.

welcome to UHE Savvy but I think this view is wrong. I could out it more strongly but I'll refrain!

get a spruce up kit off me, get a new float valve and do the job right. the dell orto gets the blame for the ignition timing being wrong more often than not and it doesn't deserve it.

THanks for all the replies guys. My intake manifold DOES look to be cracked but after spraying some WD40 around it whilst the engine was running it didn't seem to change the idle. Also i just realized last time i put it together i put the floats upside down. i'll take it out and put it back together right this time i hope and c what happens. here's some photo's of what i'm working with - notice the floats are upside down - oops! Manual says 2 to 3 turns out for mixture screw. I'm sure this is the stock Dellorto carb but not sure if original jetting. Also is that cylindrical filter supposed to be there? I don't see it in the dellorto tuning guide diagram.
I read off the following numbers - the dellorto tuning guide diagrams don't give an adequate description of what is what:

Main jet: 180

needle: 35 with the clip now at the 2nd to lowest notch

258 - what is this thing?

35 - which one is this?

50 - which one is this?

The cylindrical filter IS supposed to be there. The jet #258 is the needle jet, #35 is the pilot jet, and #50 is the start jet. The mixture screw setting seems about right but that setting is somewhat dependant on the individual motor. You still need to check for leaks in the air boot as they are prone to cracking with age. I've had weird jetting issues in the past and then discovered that I had forgotten to tighten the clamp(s) on either end of the carb.

I concur with Taffy - there is nothing wrong with the Dellorto carbs. Both the flat slide on my '96 FE501 and the round slide on my '02 FE650 worked as well as the Keihin on my '05 FE550. I wouldn't change it.
 
that isn't the regular Dell Orto PHM carb is it? and the jet settings aren't for a Husaberg are they? I mean 258? WTF?

that's the wrong carb for the bike so all bets are off and you're on your own!

get rid of it, get the right one and start all over again.
