................. When you talk about oiling the chain, what sort of chain oil do you use. I've heard of people using simple CRC stuff, then there's the slightly thicker Lanolin stuff, then the spray on grease, then we have a range of chain oils, right up to the super-thick stuff that says it resists throw-off. It sure makes a mess though. (Although I saw a thick one advertised the other day as 'clear').

What do you think Steve?

And how long is a piece of string, and what engine oil and tyres are best?

On my dirt bikes I like an oil applied sparingly. I've used chainsaw bar oil, heavy gear oil etc, but for simplicity, I use an aerosol mostly. Castrol Chain Oil is afavoutite because it works and is a fair bit cheaper from an auto parts place than a bike shop that sells bike lubes. Right now, I probably have 6-8 different chain lubes in the shed.

The 'best' road bike chain lube I've ever used was a long superceded Castrol. It came out a heavy black grease and if applied to a hot chain at the end of the ride did not come off. The chains on my gone but not forgotten ZX9R lasted over 50,000 kms and that included lots of 2 up road and track work. The factory spec for adjustment on that bike was too tight which was an issue too. But it was too sticky for use on the dirt bike as all it did was attract grunge. I still have somne in the shed as I stocked up when I found out it was disappearing, and with shaft drive on the GTR, its now synthetic gear oil on the final drive :D

Lots out there swear by no lube at all, but I can't deal with the metal on metal squeal.

Oh yeah, best tyres in my experience are round and black, and best oil is Delo 400.
