What oil to use?

Actually, you want the narrow span - from what I have read and understand.

You select the numbers based on the current season - if it is summer you can run 15W rather than 10W, it will be fine, and having the upper be 50 rather than 40 is fine too.

Where I live it rarely gets below freezing here, and when it gets below 40F I just don't ride anyway - at least not until if/when I get a snowbike conversion and then I can go with a lower base/winter viscosity to run the bike in the cold temps.

It might even be the same very same product fulfilling both specs, 5W-50 and 15W-50 at the same time.
Then why not put the SAE-number on the bottle that sells the best?, depending on local conditions and tradition.

In arctic parts of the world you know you are in trouble if it is colder than the the oil is specified for, so you want the 5W which specifies the oil to be liquid at very low temperatures. The 5W does not have to have a high HTHS but is not forbidden to have it.

In warmer areas you will look for something with the HTHS to lubricate your cam when the stuff is running hot, so you want the 15W which specifies a higher HTHS than the 5W specifies. The 15W is not specified to behave well in extremely cold conditions but is not forbidden to.

The SAE-numbers cant cover oil properties well enough which might explain why vehicle manufactureres require their own approvals for the oils to be used in their vehicles.

Correct!

The wider the span, the shorter the life of the oil. With thumpers like 'Bergs and KTMs the oil capacity is so small you ought to be using the best bike-specific oil you can find and then change it regularly.

Just last week I was talking to the techincal guy at KTM-UK. He had a very strong view about using Motorex Cross Power 4T - not because that's the oil that KTM recommend - but because Motorex works directly with KTM/Husaberg to develop their oils and because he's neer seen a probel with a bike that uses Cross Power.

I've just poured 1½ litres of Motorex into my FE570 tonight.

I have

the clutch slips too much and stresses out the oil

that means its very slippery and great for the engine when new but its turned to junk after about 3 hours in my bike.

I run Delo 400 and love it, change it Every 10 hours and do filters. My brother runs it in his Berg and my mate runs it in his Kato and Gsxr750.

$80 for 20 litres too :)

I just changed mine and I was useing Lucas 5W/20. It wasn't my first choise but it clean. Din't clean the screan and only 1 small chip on the magnet. Not a lot of body though.
