I've been using Motul 5100 15w-50 since I bought my first 94 501 in 1996. Which by the way is a semi synthetic, and the only one as far as I can see in the Motul line that it for use with engines with an integrated transmission where the oil is shared between the motor and the trans.
Each time I have had my motors rebuilt my mechanic always comments that the inside of the motor looks like new. There are a couple of reasons for this, the first of which I think has to do with the fact that I change my oil very frequently. It's cheap insurance really, and if anything is starting to run amiss you'll more than likely see it in the oil.
Second is the oil, and as supertireguy states "The oil snobs will certainly prattle on and on about how one oil is superior to all others but all the major synthetic oils are all very good." If you look at the ratings of the oil such as API SG, CCMC G4 & JASO MA for the 5100, these are ratings given by various testing organizations such as API American Petroleum Institute. And the other of which I'm not sure, but, sure the Wikipedia can tell you have to do with emissions or testing procedures.
The net net of it is that to achieve these ratings an oil must pass a standardized test in controlled laboratory conditions to meet said specifications. So, if you're interested here's a few things to get you started in educating yourself on motor oils.
I've had great results with the motul 5100, and do not run anything else. I change it after every ride, and by ride I mean anywhere from 80 miles in desert racing conditions with speed averages at 30-35mph, to 250 miles of tight trail riding with speed averages of 13mph. Each of those types of riding has it's unique demands on the oil. And the results are always the same on the magnet, just the slightest amount of fuzz.
You will also notice that when you change your oil, right after ride is the best time by the way, there will always be material floating around in the oil from the clutch that does not get passed through the filtering system. Take the used oil out in the sunlight and you'll see what I mean. Personally I do not want that crap floating around in there any longer than necessary. I also do not let my oil get so used up that it comes out black. It will almost always still have a tinge of amber to it.
Motul 5100 goes for about $26 USD for 4 liters.
Motorex Power synt 4T goes for about $56 USD. and the same ratings as the 5100.
To maintain your warranty, you'll probably have to stick with the synthetic if that's what the manual states. In fact your manual tells you exactly what the different ratings are for.
Hope this helped more than confused!
