Testing flotation of secret new low density steel crank perhaps?

i'd like to call you remotely close but only coz the other two arses were prattling on! LOL!!!!

i spent 10 minutes rigging it up. thats a corner flag which i kept after i scored all five tries in our glorious victory against the wallabies in the the 1903 tour. its fragmented due to hitting the corner flag as i scored the winning try in the 131st minute (of injury time).

oh and its sitting on the crank. trust you could tell by the blind(ing) photography!!!!

The air gun will be placed in the end of the long tube and like the emulsion tube of a carb or siphon tube of a paint spray gun the blue liquid will be sucked up the tube and sprayed in the crankcase.

nearly there eric but no cigar!

"sprayed in the cases"?

i know its a little hazy but it holds 8 of 'em!

thing is what have i managed to do after all this? (bed time soon!!!!!)

High pressure mixture of air and the blue mystery liquid.

sorry i edited twixt original and yours

clue: how many blue liquids would you want to go near your crank (forget that its blue for a start!)

Diesel fuel, perhaps dyed blue denoting no road taxes?

eric, i'm glad i know you personally because on this occasion that makes it funnier but i'm not really here to poke fun. you did make me chuckle though!

as i said, forget that it's blue and think of the only two liquids you'd allow in your crank.

one begins with 'O' and the other i guess you'd start with a 'D'.

once the penny drops you're gonna cuss me!!!

you nearly had it for a minute....and then the minute went!

all the best

Allright time to spill the beans. I am leaving on vacation tomorrow and won't be back until Monday. Don't make me wait till then :)

Taff,

There are bubbles in the liquid in the photos, so I reckon you are probably blowing air through oil galleries in the crank or rod? I haven ever sen a stripped down Berg engine or crank, so its just a guess cos I dont know if there are oil galleries in there.

liquid would prolly be diesel, as you say only diesel or oil, but maybe kerosine - the stuff you buy over here is blue like in the photos, prolly to stop folks drinking it mistaken for water? but I wouldn necissarily want kerro on my crank other than to wash parts.

Azza.

Can't really tell from the pic but my best quess is you have rigged up a way to test the crank/rod for stress cracks by passing a current through the dyed liquid.

ok eric needs to know!

i wanted to wash out the gallery inside the crank but what a quandry!!!! if i flush into the crank i will be dislodging muck forwards and further in.

as i have said before when i saw 'cranksnapper's' two snapped cranks: the oil goes through a hole no more than say 0.4mm in the big end pin. get some muck dislodged forwards and jammed in there and you're in real trouble!

gary grover and i discussed this and he felt that a blocked oil gallery was the reason for many failures.

so how do i flush the crank outwards without splitting the crank? the degreaser needs to come from the big end through the crank and out?

so using the spray gun principle i rigged up this lil lot. it worked a treat with the very can that had supplied the 'gunk' collecting the very fine mist that came out the flag. i had to put a dentist's pick in that tiny hole in the crank to keep the suction through the crank otherwise it does work. that nipple on the end of the flag is a ducati pantah clutch lever rubber cover. the crank is sat in a 400 linar. i used a pipe smoker's cleaning brush down the gallery first. and then did this so that everything travelled OUTWARDS.

anyway - just testin y'all!

Taffy
