Not being an engineer I do not have the creditials to agree or disagree with you on this subject. It may well be that the current engine is not what was hoped for in the next stage of developement.
In my opinion(I am in my 30th year selling new Yamaha motorcycles)the Xt500 engine was a terrific engine and built a strong following. It was superseded by the xt550/600 engine that seemed more complicated, less reliable and was "milk toast".Next the 660 cc liquid engine was better but still lacked that something special.Enter the new YZ 400-to current 450 engine that is indeed a jewell.
My point here is that although Yamaha did not seem as if they were moving forward,in fact it may be that it would not have been possible to get from the Xt500 to the Yz400 without the xt550-600-660.
It may also be possible that Husaberg will in the future have a engine that will be truly functional and truly inspired. It may also be possible that to get there, they will have had to be here....
this is the longer, hope it makes sense to you version :D

Hi Nsman,
Hindsight is 20 /20 should one be willing to look. However, closed eyes benefit not. :?

Hi there all speculators.
DO NOT REMOVE THE BALANCER IF YOU DON´T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
if i´m guessing the Husaberg has a 50% balancefactor.
And another guess would be that in a race single you could get away with a 70% balancefactor.
It´s more complicated to achieve that than just fix it with your garden tools.
I´m sure Dale has done this dozens of times on different engines, but average Joe should NOT attempt this at home.
In other words, please leave it alone.

Good luck on your eternal horsepower search!

Hi Magnusson,
I don't believe that Dale is recommending that the counterbalancer be removed from the current engine. All he is saying is that he feels that that the current design is more about being different than being better. He makes it clear that he prefers the pre 2001 engine. He is entitled to his opinion and I make it clear that I do not have the credetials to agree or disagree with him.
Nowwhere is it said that that the current engine is not a suitable and capable engine for the current line of Husabergs. This current engine is well liked by the buying public and there is no history of recurring failures.
All that was said was that Dale does not believe that the current design is the step forward he had hoped for.
This was started by his comment that he felt that the 2006 WEC bikes had the counterbalancers removed and I wondered why he would say that.

Hi Magnusson,
Yes, I have indeed removed dozens of Husaberg balance units both axial and remote.

Depending on several variables I most often use between a 60% and 80% balance factor.

I prefer to add "Heavy Metal" as opposed to simply drilling holes.

As Magnusson stated:
"DO NOT REMOVE THE BALANCER IF YOU DON´T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!"

Such is not a job for the local automotive machine shop as the crankshaft material is quite hard and the operation requires patience, proper equipment and experience.

Sincerely,
Dale

The following is a good review written by our own "JOEUSA" regarding crankshaft balance and fuel delivery:
Prepping Joe's 550

Simply for the sake of enlightened debate and without malice:
You have a giant "Tomahawk" mounted on one side of the crankshaft.
Such creates what is known as a "Rocking Couple" which is potentially harmful to the main bearings and crankshaft.

Why do you suppose most singles place a "contra rotating" balance weight directly between the crankshaft bobs?

Sincerely,
Dale

OK, knowing well that this is controversial:

Slight slippage of the main bearing on the crank (primary side, and CB side) was evident on my ´02 when I rebuilt it. The same can be seen in UHE member Karl´s gallery from his rebuild. Coincidence? Maybe just higher radial load from the primary gear?

This is just a reflection, and I expect no reply.
