water getting into carb

The bike didn`t come with 1 when i bought it privately.I live in england.I was just wandering if this was part of the water getting into the carb problem

Cheers berman450

beerman

i've never had water in the carb but i've had plenty in the sock/boot over the years.

where are you from?

I live in Cornwall Taffy.I get water in the rubber boot so when riding off-roading i get droplets splash into carb.I`ve siliconed the frame above the air filter but haven`t been out riding yet to see if this works, i hope this does the trick.Any other mods that you know of would be greatly appreciated.

I am glad i got water in my carb......

I washed my bike a few weeks ago and wasn't too careful and got some water in my carb, hard to start and wouldn't keep running without the choke. I took off the bottom nut cup on the carb and guess what i found......Two pieces of metal, the pilot jet splash tube. The bike is 2 months old and when i bought it the dealer put in a bigger pilot jet,so it would run better, I brought the carb back to the dealer and he said it was there fault, We came to a agreement and there is one on order....

Still haven`t been riding since i siliconed barrier above air filter. Is there any way the water could come from the engine breather & enter the frame.Looked at the mods someone has done on owners doc, is this the reason for the mods?

If any water came out of there, I guess you'd be running some type of revolutionary water-powered engine.

Out of the breather(s) only air (and a bit of exhaust gas I guess, which does contain a bit of vapor) is supposed to come, and sometimes oil, accidentally. The breather(s) mod is there to prevent engine oil from getting into the carby through the frame in case you lay it on the left side (or upside down).

Jason & Taffy, why don't we expand the Owner's Doc "goodies" section and add a list of all the aftermarket parts available out there.

I know Husabutt had done a list. It can only be improved.

The so called list I did was to merely revamp the web links section the best I could trying to be as Husaberg specific as possible. The problem with that is if there is no web site the part does not get included. Bend Berg's air intake cover comes to mind. Perhaps merely starting a thread listing out known aftermarket parts and where to get them would be beneficial. If it turns out good it could perhaps be made a sticky.

Went for a ride today, second trail, first bit of water, only up to front wheel axle, bluuuuuuu, took off seat and the air filter was soaked, squeezed out water, got rid of water in rubber boot, drained carb, fired her up,went 25meters,bluuuuuuu,drained carb again, ended up doing this 4 times to get home, any more ideas other than silicone lip on the frame as i`ve already done this.
Is there any chance of this being engine oil as i topped it up a bit this morning and the water in the rubber boot seemed to have traces of oil in it.
Took of carb now to strip & clean.
Please help.

The only trouble I've had is when crossing broad deep streams up to bottom of tank, is that the carb vent hoses pull some water into the carb and it will crap out. I posted about this a while back and wondered if one could simply run one tube from each pair on the FCR, up the frame to behind the steering head area. If you notice there are only two vents, but each vent has a "T" on it and thus two tubes/hoses for each vent. By having the two vents in this fashion you still have the low one on each vent to let gas out the bottom in a tip over or shunt, and when those low ones get plugged with water as in a crossing, the upper ones still have free air. FryGuy confirmed this, in his words "this makes the bike a virtual submarine".

I know you have the problem with it getting into your boot, so this is just another suggestion.

You must be hitting the water really fast if it's only up to the axles and it's soaking your air cleaner.

on my mark 1 FCR there are 5 vents or more i think....

the vent in the top left and right that split into 2 do nothing that the bottom one doesn't - feed air to the float bowl.

so i blocked one end off completely and then with the other i blocked one end and did a loop away and down. 6" tube was all that was needed. nobody seems to get this but if you do a loop your bike would have to suck up water while doing a 360 end over end! nbow are you telling me that after one of those - you'll even be looking to ride?

in the meantime the bottom vent was split two ways and as daleO says: one pipe up-one pipe down.

but this is for the FCR!

regarding the boot: you should squeeze it on the frame and actually depress it in with your hand under the clip. use your thumbnail to detect how much material you managed to get the clip onto. another thing to try is to gently scribe a light scratch into the blue paint some 12mm or so up. when the boot makes it to your line - your ok!

check that the belmouth on the carb is 62mm in diameter as well just incase you bought a modded bike!

here endeth the lesson...

Taffy & DaleEO, first of all thanks for the info on the vents.Secondly, is there any chance that the water is coming in from under the seat close to the CDI unit as bottom of the air filter seems to always be wet.I was thinking of putting some thick course foam in this area to protect the air filter & the CDI unit from water, is this a good idea?
Cheers bergman450

i've honestly never had the problem. even when i did an army tank assault coiurse 5 years ago the filter was the one area that didn't get it.

you'll have to put a lot more effort in my friend i'm afraid....

Taffy

Hit the water fairly fast, not sure what speed but enough to nearly take my feet off the pegs & at 15 stone it may have been a bit fast.

Well then, that explains how your filter got saturated!! The water probably blew up under the tank.
