I'd guess that if you have got the flat tappets the feeler gauges are the best way to set the lash. But if you have the concave tappets i doubt the goodness of the gauges strongly. Tappets are made flat or concave, which ones did your bike come with?

Hi smorgy

I flattened mine off with 800 as they were a liitle worn, enough to feel the cup while feeling the feelers, they had about a 0.01mm cup

so even "badly" cupped the variation is + 0.01 from measured. still better than +/- 0.02 by the turns thingy.

I like the lash forward and back idea

was gonna go for a ride but found a cracked rear rim.... more ktm plasticene

At 85h I replaced tappets because I had over tightened them too many times. The old ones were flat and showed some wear that I think was a lot like the wear of your tappets. The new tappets were concave when purchased new and were a lot deeper. I never bothered to try to measure them. (One of these new bastlers turned blue and seized in under 5 hours. But that is another story.) I would not trust the feeler gauge with my new tappets, they are that dished. With the old flat tappets I'd happily use feeler gauges even when worn 85h. Regards.

it's not just the tappet pads, its at least 50% the knuckle joint. the that wears and goes all floppy so the tappets are changing their clearance all the time.
