hi all, i am not riding my 600 for 2 weeks now due to failure.
it starts really easy by 1 or 2 kicks but it runs and feels very week-poor-unstable (note that it revs all the way). it backfires after 1 or 2 minutes and dies. just like when you have air leak from somewhere. i checked it and came up with nothing.
i even found a second handed but in new condition-mostlikely stolen!- dellorto phm 40 with jets according to fe 600 manual, installed it but still the same thing.
then i measured my sem and it looks good, i removed the sparkplug and with some kicking i saw a very good spark.i didnt put a new one though.
i checked the wires all the way too.
i even removed the cylinderhead to check the gasket.i adjusted the valves too.
has any one any idea?

yes it does look similar to my symptoms! i only hope it is the fuel pump or just need a new sparkplug and not have to buy a new stator because i think that it goes with the flywheel and not sold separately....

Hello Oyk
I have put my bike in hibernation for 4 or 5 weeks due to injury, so decided to turn off the fuel taps and run the carb bowl dry. Whilst running it dry it sounded exactly like you describe.
I'm no expert, but i would say fuel starvation.
Maybe:
Dirt in fuel tank
Blockage in fuel taps (if you pull the pipe off and open the valves, does the petrol flow out fast ?)
Float bowl sticking due to scaling of a dry carb around the rubber bit.
Reed valves stuck
etc etc
Sounds like juice problem to me.

Good luck
Regards
Ady

I would check for good fuel supply to the carb because one to two minutes running sounds like about one float bowl full of fuel. When it runs out it would go lean just like an air leak as you say. Isn't there a strainer under a banjo fitting on the side of the carb? (... but then you said you changed carbs & it was the same.) Is fuel flow out the hose good with it off the carb & tap on? Is there another strainer inside the tank on the fuel ****? Any difference with the tank full to the top as opposed to part empty? Does it run with a hose from another fuel tank of some sort? Is it possible the tank vent is blocked & the tank is under vaccuum?

I'm pretty sure the fuel pump does not pump into the inlet of the carb, it just dumps fuel from the low RHS to the high LHS. The carb is gravity fed from the LHS. With a full tank, a dead pump should have no effect.

In this case I would not suspect stator or CDI until you have proved the problem ain't fuel. It does not seem as if it has time to get hot to induce a problem in it, and you say that spark is good when cold.
