Just read the true story of Invercargill and New Zealand's legend that was Burt Munro.

what a man! the film can hardly do justice to him!

the book is out of print but copies are cheap:
Indian The Legend of Speed

Roger Donaldson who directed "the worlds fastest indian" had an interest with Burt most of his adult life. He also made another film in around 1970 titled "offerings to the gods of speed". It is a short real life doco that runs for 20min or so. It is well worth the watch, as its full of original footage from the day ect.
I love when Roger asks Burt, Why do you like going fast??
Burt replies, Ive allways like going fast, Who dosn't??

Once again- Proud to be a New Zealander!!

Perhaps my favourite bike video is 'Twice Upon a Caravan'. Somewhat reflective perhaps of my current enthusiasm for adventure travel now that I'm retired. I saw it first at the Bright Advenure Travel Film Festival a couple of years ago. As it happens I'm off there again next week.

A clip is here:
Around the world by motorbike in 1932 ? video | Travel | The Guardian

I eventually managed to acquire my own copy from:
Twice Upon a Caravan (DVD) - Whitehorse Gear

I've watched it a number of times now and each time I see more, great stuff

"Faster" - about MotoGP

"Moto3" - about Motocross riders

"TT Closer to the Edge" - about Isle of Man races

"Mondo Enduro" - A. Vince - the real Adv movie

"Terra Circa" - A. Vince - very good

that is my favorite saying '' offerings to the god of speed '' we have our own altair in our garage with grenaded cylinders , melted pistons, and shortened sparkplugs. It is amazing what 9500rpms and a little heat can do to a piece of metal . We have always kept these chunks of metal to remind us what a mistake looks like ,but when when I heard that line in the movie I knew it was for more than that . now I have to watch it again another great movie but without motors ''The Flying Scotsman'' The story of Graeme Obree

Tuning for speed by Phil Irving.

a great book, an Australian's story for sure! the American lady he so obviously impressed at the TT had no idea what she was really marrying! I think Phil overdid the "shedtime"! and I doubt the honeymoon even got completed!

an amazing engineer and one of the few that can shed any light on the BBI from that time!

chuck in the round-the-world trip in 1929, the round australia rallys, speedway, the building of Philip Island race track and the Repco engine and you have a facinating man!

my copy cost me £85 but looks like cheap beer now!

I searched the world for a copy of Harry Ricardo's book on the Int Comb Eng and that cost £150 from Oz. it was a 4th print from the early 60s (the last print) and can never have the impact of the first print edition just after WW!.

Taffy

other great books by or about engineers are
Franklyn's Indians
How to build a better Mouse trap (Rex McCandless)
Grand Prix Motorcycle engines - Kevin Cameron

avoid anything by Mick Walker. that is why the book on Doctor T is useless.

one book that has never been written and is a crime: one about Julio Carcano of Moto Guzzi. surely any man in charge of an inline shaft drive four, an across the frame V8, a flat single, a 120d V-twin shsould have had his own book?

Taffy
