Taff's electrical problems 2006

the problem continued today. no water just a tiny amount of mud.

the bike started and ran properly for 3 x 25 minute laps. however whenever i stopped the bike at the end of the lap it would be a ******* to start.

it then started stalling while at tickover. this could be offset by raising the idle so that when it had one of it's moments it would keep going. all it would do occasionally is miss a beat which she has done for as long as i can remember.

eventually on lap 5 i locked everything up to avoid a rider i'd been running with all day (No. 101) and would it start again? WIF!!!!

when it did get going again it was fine and it only stalled once more whilst racing so only twice in total!

but it seems the idle and restart are the problem at present. could be carb but you know, this has been going on too long to be muck in the carb: a problem i've rarely experienced.

well i've cured the bugger! :D :D
i've fitted a new plug this week. it was an IXU24 Nippondenso. oh and by the way i fitted a used stator that was advertised here at UHE. i got it along with the coil for a song and after fitting the plug i trimmed the outer plastic off again and re-tubed the wires from the stator before firing it up. the bike has started easily all day today first kick. it hasn't stalled once, it never missed a beat and i even lowered the dle/tickover to make better rekluse clutch work.

definately a good day at the office...

the symptoms were the same as a 'CHEAP' plug so i'm not 100% sure which was the correct cure.

Taffy, now that you've got your steed running again, why don't you take that old stator and send it to me or one of the other electrical geeks on UHE and have it tested with an oscilloscope. That way you and all others here can know for sure what the f#$^^$#$ is wrong with it. :D I'm still betting it's the pickup coil, and I'll bet my blown-up 501 motor I'm right. Take care......DC  8)

i'd send it to portugal to the bloke there that knows his onions.... might do that sometime. it is soooooo good to just touch the kicklever and have it start.

and to think EVERYONE' said "and when they pack up - they pack up!!!"

My '04 KTM 525 (540) EXC recently began exhibiting similar symptoms, and I subsequently went through the typical checklist to no avail. The stator looked OK and even tested out OK on the bench. A new stator instantly cured the problem. Perhaps I should have put the old stator in the oven prior to testing??

 Well, at least you're finally in a good mood. I'm hoping to ride mine next weekend as opposed to endless workdays. I'm gonna try to go to a dual-sport bike so I can get some saddle time during the week. As for the stators, they indeed do not always pack up completely and that's one of the reasons I can make a living diagnosing automotive electronics. What a country!!!!! :D Have a ball.....DC
