sidecar cross - great racing!

sure!

you put the 650 crank with it's 10mm longer stroke. half the stroke is the throw which is 5mm. so you need a rod that's 5mm shorter. a 124mm rod becomes a 119mm rod.

they don't do a 119mm rod but they do do a 120mm rod. so what you do then is check the squish on your present engine and every 0.1mm over 1mm squish is a bit less than the 1mm you should remove from the rim of the piston.

i don't think anyone has ever said what the squish on a 550 is actually? but people like weed have had up to 3mm on a 650 and 2mm isn't unsual. if this was true for the 550, it means it would bolt togeher like a race engine.

then you check 2 things:
firstly, how much the piston misses the crank flywheels by at BDC.

secondly, the aspect ratio of the length of rod compared to the stroke. 1.65 is about as short as you want.

70mm x 1.65 = 115.5mm. so the 120mm rod is about 1.7 to 1 and fine.

the only disadvantage i see is the pressure on the linar. they warp anyway!

it takes about a minute on the doc plus one cse grade U from school!

another nice outfit, unique combo of Berg and LC4 KTM parts!

what got me was that ther was only teloscopic forks, not leading link, so it must be a pig to turn? and the forks must cop a hiding too?

Azza.

The main reason for the 550 engine is that I could make a good bargain with a bike leaning against someone's workshop wall for some years. Most 650 engines are found in SM models and that's rather expensive (wheels, brakes etc). The idea of the Estonian AYR frame is to use as much of the original solo bike as possible but that didn't work out in our case. We would have to make many modifications to fit the Husaberg plastics etc. That's why it's LC4 stuff. Red and white colors, who remembers the Yamaha YZ250 year 1985?
At our level of racing the 550 isn't a real problem, tracks in Finland are short with lots of corners. I was thinking about installing the 105 mm piston. Suspension is very different but typical for AYR compared with other manufacturers. In the back a WP PDS shock in combination with a link system. In the front WP USD fork shortened and modified. The clamps for the front axle and triple clamps are specially made for sidecar mx. It steers very, very light. For a 2-stroke I think it's too light in the front but with the easier going 4-stroke it's perfect. Look at the result list of MX-SC GP-level and check who's using AYR.

Stephan

i wouldn't go to 105mm. they really aren't reliable yet!

you should put a cam in it, port it, BV head, 32mm exhaust valves etc etc. even the carb can be done.

but 105mm piston? no.
