Thanks 'spode, I'm going to try this in my bro in laws bike, it has only been rebuilt 20 odd hours ago.

mine has done this occasionally, and it coincides with upping the oil SAE, so i will do the same.

i'll report back on results.

Oil SAE? Society of Automotive Engineers?

Weight perhaps?

I always kick it when its cold with 15w/40 Delo 400 and its fine. 20w/50 is definitely a bit thick for low temp starting. Below zero the 15w is too, but leave it out in the sun for a bit and its OK.

Pardon me - oil viscosity - I think you knew what I meant Steve, the viscosity of the oil, (am i wrong in what i stated?) anyways, I thought that the Bel Ray 20 - 50 I was using a few changes ago may have bogged up the sprague?? (it may have been 10 - 40W but i think i went for the higher viscosity.

the temps on KI are rarely below 10 deg when you are riding, worst is 2 - 4 deg on the coast and -1 or -2 middle inland, so my oil is probably too thick, maybe time to pul back a bit?

SAE is only the approved measure, so my understanding is that 20W - 50 means that it will work adequately at between -20 deg c in coldest conds (the 'W" or winter measurement and 50 (assume that must be close to 50 or 60 C in normal hot atmospheric conditions.

happy to eat sH**t here as well if im wrong too.

Azza.

Azza, close, but no cigar. the numbers relate to viscosity and temperature, but are not temperatures as such. The second number is for operating temp, and the first relates to ambient at startup.

I know that when starting my 650 when below 10 deg with 15w40 the sprague can slip. I'd reckon 20w would be too thick below say 15 deg, although I haven't tested it. Below zero and it is hard to get it spinning enough to fire when kicking with 15w.

Lots of opinions, to wade through, but look especially for contributions from Alan J. He does seem to know his stuff. You may need to join to get access, else pm me and I'll lend you my login. Discussion included about cold starts and warm up tactics.
