Hey all

It has been too long since I too my bad water pump seal out and wanted to ask what way the new one goes back in, I have the water pump cover off, impeller out seal ready to go in and I can't remember if it goes in flat side out or in, must need some beer because this working on bikes sober just is not working!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks
Sethro

I just did this. The flat side goes toward the outside of the cover (impeller side). Since there is water on one side and oil on the other side, you actually have fluids on both sides! It is very important to do two things. First, drive the seal into the case evenly and level with the cover. I usually use a socket and a small hammer to drive it. Secondly, when you replace the case, make sure you use the phallic plastic adapter piece from Husaberg or you can also use a piece of heat shrink tubing. Otherwise the circlip groove will ruin the seal lip and you will cry. :crying:

celtic, you and jzfe are saying 2 different things yea? I installed it spring out or facing impeller, took a little air to the weep hole and water came out the seal not around shaft but escaping past the metal to metal outer part of seal

Don't listen to me, check your manual! Like I said, I just replaced mine and no leakage. I put mine in the same way it came out. If you are leaking past the outside of the seal then apply some silicone or gasket seal to the outside first.

Yes it appears you guys are conflicting.
As with any seal, the sealing lip and spring should face the fluid you are trying to seal against.
Therefore a wp shaft seal is trying to seal against the water so the spring should be in the water.
The oil seal and o-ring are there to keep the oil at bay.

The real question is how do you get the seal out with the cover on and not wreck the wp shaft? That's the problem with the newer metal clad seals they are not easy like the old style.

Supposedly the 07 seals were supposed to have a rubber outer coating like the old style and the seal material a bit softer.

However, I pull the cover and knock the seal out from the back side.

I use an 1" diameter aluminum drift to drive the new seal in nice and easy keepiing it square the whole time. If it goes **** eyed on you it is distorted and will not seal, had the same problem you are experiencing. I also use Three Bond 1211 sealant on the outside of the seal to make sure that it seals against the case. Make sure it is super clean before applying sealant. Put in the seal and let the 1211 set up over night.

Like another poster said here, cover the water pump impeller circlip groove with something or it will be all for naught. I just use a couple of wraps of electrical tape with a bit of silicone lube on it.

Best of luck,

A clarification! There is no oil inside the water pump seal. The oil is kept in place by the sealed ball bearing. Just outside that there is an area with air (normally) that also has the weep hole in the bottom part. Bad water pump seal means water out of weep hole and bad sealing in the ball bearing means oil out of weep hole. The grove with the spring in the seal shall be turned to the water side (out). It will probably work in the opposite direction also as long as you don't have high pressure.

and you sir are correct !!!

but ....

having a lot of experience in this area i have tried fitting the seal with the spring facing inwards and outwards . i got a good seal with the spring facing inwards as well .

but technically the spring is to be immersed so the pressure inside the water pump housing forces the seal to grip onto the shaft .

thanks guys, off with the cover to put this little sucker in, dang it!

Unfortunately he is correct and I put mine in backwards. I was replacing the other seals for the gearshaft and kickstart and just did this one the same way. So far no leaks, though. :D

moral of the story is when the weep hole starts to weep its time for a new Husaberg!just ask Bigbob!dan

Dan,
Not yet. I just got my FE-550 set up properly. :D Big Bob should have bought the 550 to begin with!
