Hi all,

Having replaced the pump seal about 5 or 6 hundred miles ago it has started to weep coolant from the weep hole. I have removed the pump impeller, no play in the shaft and the seal is still nice an supple, and on installation protected the shaft end so as not to damage the seal flange. The question is has any body had a leaky seal but the leakage is from the outer side of the seal where it presses into the case?. When I fitted the seal it didn't seem a really tight fit, not far from being able to press it in with your thumb.
The seal fitted was of OEM with the blue type sealant on it.
The other question is has any body removed this seal with the casing in situe.

Regards

Sparks.

The last "blue" seal I put in, I had to press in. I don't think I could have pressed it in by thumb. I have my side cover off at the moment. I'm actually ready to go about putting in a new WP seal, so I'll let you know. When I installed my last seal, I put a thin coating of three bond around the mating surface of the cover, the seal weeped for a bit while it seated, but didn't leak for 40 hours or so after that so I can't speak of the leaking around the O.D., (I recently pulled the cover when changing my timing chain). Also, I've always installed them with the cover off.

i too had to put sealer on the blue seal when i put it in my 650. when first put in, it leaked around the outside. and the fit was rather tight.

Yep, definitely had to press it in.

Thanks for that Ned, sealer it is then. I only replaced it as a matter of prevention when I did the torque limiter, that seal had done over 2500 miles without dropping a tear, this is why I'm thinking this one is leaking on the OD.

Re: RE: pump seal

Have they changed the seal again? My last seal had a metal outer surface and the old one i removed had the blue rubber outside. This was for an FE 501-02. On my latest HB (FE450-07) I still haven't changed the seal, over 80 hrs now. Interesting though is that it occasianally leaked small amount of oil between 10-20 hrs but nothing after that. As a result of that my dealer ordered a kit with the oil seal, o-ring, gasket, waterpump seal etc, which i now have as an emergency kit. In this kit the waterpump seal also had a metal outer!

I don't know how many revisions the seal has gone through, but the first seal I took out was rubber, I have a all metal with blue on the O.D. and an all metal that is not coated on the O.D. I've only tried the blue seals thus far.

Re: RE: pump seal

Well I put some Wurth sealer around the OD of the seal, did a 10 mile ride yesterday didn't weep a drop, seems to have done the trick " for now", cheers Ned.

HELP Pleas /Tomas
Fe 450-06

on the lip / groove that holds the impeller for the waterpump, take a small file and slightly remove the sharpness from the front and rear edges. and grease the seal inside as well as the shaft. this keeps the seal from being damaged when being reinstalled.

Do you have the correct oil level? (900cc)

I have ordered a Orangeberg WP-Seal kit, have pm'ed him about the status, but he is not responding?

Tips anyone?

If your leaking oil you will probably need a bearing as well.

PISS!

So Im like yeah lets replace this seal that is leaking a tiny bit of oil. Hard time getting the seal out, and I damaged the side of the new seal that you used to bash it in. Well not the bike leaks anti freeze (drip drip drip) when is not even running.

Any tips? did I not push it in far enough? Ill be getting the orangeberg kit now for sure...

Is it possible you scratched the case where the perimeter of the seal goes? If so, water could be leaking around the seal. Next time, smear a light amount of silicone sealer here before pressing the new seal in.

Look the water pump off, bashed the seal in a bit further.

Started the bike it did not leak for roughly 30 seconds, then started, it leaks smaller drops a bit slower.

So I bash it in a bit further?

I'd try again w/ a new seal. But some sealant around the OD. That'll make sure there's no leaks around the outside. Don't know what you mean by "bashing", but FWIW I pressed my seal into place.

You will probably find you have a small groove worn on the shaft where the seal sits, this was the root of my problem, but I did manage to press the seal in a bit further to run on virgin steel, this cured my problem, if not you could be looking at a new impeller shaft.
