The plastics on my '03 FE 501 berg is getting worn out and I saw this bike.

Looks like the owner painted the bike himself except for the front fender.
Is the plastic on my berg paintable, and do I need to do something with the plastic before applying the paint?
I kind of want to paint all of the plastics black, buy a black supermotard fender, black seat cover and some new decals :)

dobster, please check my gallery, the BLACKBERG there is an 04 FE450. All black parts came from my Berg dealer

all the black parts on that bike are avalible from dealers.

the only part not avalible in black is the tank.

the 'black' tank that cam on the sm models a few years ago was actually a really dark blue and when placed next to proper black plastics the difference was obvious.

there are a couple of threads if you can find them where people have painted or dyed their tanks black with some success.

You might also want to chase up some black plastics from these guys

I have used their plastics and the bikes come up great. There are also two sets of black plastics on ebay at the moment.

The blue/black tanks are cheapest from the States and here in Australia at least the prices are ridiculous at $600+.
These also allow the fitment of a cooling fan that may be an advantage. I have tried to atttach an image of one of my finished projects below

Each to their own but I think painted plastics unless your a professional spray painter tend to look very poor, very fast. Cheers.

Thanks for all replies.
I haven't decided what to do yet, though.

You cant paint the tank, it will bubble after a few months. the type of plastics that fuel tanks are made of are usualy able to be dyed with "Rit" dye. check out advrivder or do a goole search to find the proper procedure on how to dye a tank, you can also check out how to do it on youtube. I beleive the regular plastics will hold a paintjob best if you very lightly and breifly, with a small bernzomatic torch, flame the outside of the surface then wipe off the residue with painters wax and grease remover prior to painting, also can be seen on you tube. Of course buying a new set of black plastics would probably look better and definatly last longer but also costs more money.
