excellent Olympics, been watching as much as I could. thank god for the BBC!
things I note
glad the ruskies got half chucked out. next time get the other half as well.
poor crowds, Brazilians only have a love of footie - shame!
two countries excelled, firstly you just have to hand it to GBR, wow!!!!! 60 Million people second and beat China (1,300 million people)
Russia (Millions of Millions)
Germany (100-120 million people)
Japan (100-120 Million)
I also thought the Yanks were awesome too! they like the GB team grabbed a bunch of the Russian and Chinese medals as China backs off from having hosted the games.
loved the Fijians winning a first ever medal - a gold at that - in the Rugby 7s. they were absolutely awesome! probably the moment of the games that.
best individual thing is split between the South African Wayde van Niekerk breaking the world record of Michael Johnson's (USA) in the 400m. I was there when MJ set it 17 years ago! and the other was a sport I'm not into: show jumping when a 58 year old man won the individual gold medal Nick Skelton (GBR) - both awesome!
if you want to know how the Brits did it; its called" lottery funding". basically, we the people play the lottery and all the profit goes to good causes like rebuilding club houses, youth centres etc. it also goes to SPORT ENGLAND and all the sports appeal for money as well as individual sportmen. if you get a good result the funding continues. if you don't - it's reduced or stopped.
so if out of nowhere a sportsman is good at say Taekwondo he not only gets money but so does the governing body of that sport! then you are invited to train at home and abroad and stay where all the fitness and, physio, massuer people are etc.
its all results based. it even has enough money in it to pay for the best coaches. it works!
but the Americans are out on their own nowadays! well done to the States! If American TV is like it was when I was last over: did anyone notice that the games were on?
