i miss froggy for this one, he would always bring up this kind of stuff....

anyway, enjoying these olympics some great stuff happening. the 100M men's has to be the highlight so far and tonight could be even better. i was in seville the night michael johnson set the world record and i never thought i'd see it broken. full stop. in a way i still don't! usian bolt is something else. the 100 and 200M events in recent years have become USA v 'all those little islands'(carribean) and its about evens.

so chinese to top the medals (gold counted first) i think thats a first?
russia disappearing backwards as are all the eastern block. sure they'll win a few. cubas poverty sees them gradually leave the table.

USA's influence is narrowing down to swimming and the >400M stuff.

phelps - awesome! all those records? the suits? surely!

and the british are leading the aussies in the 'sitting-on-your-arse' medal table. infact i think we lead the world in arse-sitting sports!

still more to come....

It has been a pretty good olympics, with some changing of the guard. I kind of like the time zone change, I can catch some races before going to work, although my wife had to call me and verbally (live as she watched it) tell me how the men's 200 went today (I still can't find a video).

Hey Taff, what happened to all those Brits that ran the 800/1500 in the '80s? Where's the next bunch? Seb was amazing, and an inspiration to me.

After it is over, we can get a little break before chasing down ISDE results for 6 days.

cheers TM

yes they were good days but we suffered from losing all the good coaches due to politicking, the talent dried up and the africans took over.

you've gotta live on a mountain, run 5 miles to school and eat the perfect diet of maze. kipchoga keino didn't even know what he had started when he chased the school bus........

speaking of africans etc its worth remembering that its BIG money and a way out of the gutter down there.

what happened to your throwers, long jumpers etc etc. someone on the BBC said yesterday that these were the first ever olypics that the USA haven't entered the

discus
hammer
shot putt
long jump
triple jump

etc etc

seems both nations have been sat supping the same beers on the sofa!

I think USA T&F will be taking quite a look at what went wrong. I know that the USA has been very serious about making sure the sport it clean, I hate to say it, but it may be having an effect on the sport. Balistic motion sports like jumps and throws could see quite an effect if, in the past, competators were on the juice and now they are not. When I see top notch athletes blowing up (muscle pulls, etc) at the olympics, I become very suspect that may may have been juice users that are "cycled" off.

I do miss the incredible competition that used to be provided by the communist propaganda machines and their amazing (thorough bred) athletes.

You are quite right about the difference between wealthy Americans (or euros) and folks for 3rd world countries. In the USA, only a handfull of sprinters (and even less 800m to 10K runners) get the coveted shoe contracts ($$$$) that actually allow for an athlete to not drop into the financial gutter trying to train. It takes twice a day workouts to be competative, and that makes it hard to hold down a job. For us, it is a novelty, for many others it is an opportunity.

Thanks for striking up the conversation, I am a big track and field supporter (former and now masters competator) and love the drama of the olympics.

the carribean for the sprints as i say. i mean even the 110M men's hurdles went to cuba!

africa for everything from 800M up,

bellorussia, and all the USSR satellites for the 4 field events

USA in all things 400M is now a very narrow band plus almost as an abberation - clay in the dcecathlon. he almost seems out of place?

the jumps are the real smorgesborg! all the countries seem to have a balance in them.

china unable to crack track and field i mean they can't eeven dent it! they had a gold medal hope and nothing else!

talking bad times.... just look at sweden right now: kluft didn't even qualify for the final, holme no medal in HJ at all even though he was favourite, and whatsisname in the triple jump wasn't there. what a fall......

can i mention how good GBR are if we get to sit on water?

Go Canada! Yeahhhhhhhh. :(

At least we broke double-digits.

Let's see what Kamloops BC resident Gary Reed can do in the 800m, I'd love to see him on the podium (I'll be up watching it live at 4:30AM saturday).

The top seed in the 1500m and 800m didn't even get out of qualifying (interestingly, both Sudanese born). Watch out for Kaki, 19YO and top on the world in 800m, he has more to come.

Warner sure had an off day.

Robles is absolutely amazing. I have watched his races over and over and am amazing at his poise/grace. He has another world record or two in him.

The decathalon finish was good. Second, third, and fourth came down to the last event.

I haven't watched many field events this year.

The gymnastics and diving have been impressive. My 8YO daughter wants to be a hurdler (she is already very good at it), and wants to do gynmastics at the olympics now too. :) Uh-oh, this could get expensive.
