Hello everbody,

I have recently bought my first Berg, a 2003, 550fe in supermoto trim. The bike seems to run fine, and starts no problems, but i think the previous owner was a little slack on the maintenance.
Anyway,
There is a rubber boot that connects the frame/airbox to the cylinder head. The boot splits in two and each part is attached to two holes on top with jubilee clips.

I took of the clips and found that oil is some how coming out of one of the holes and going up the rubber boot.

So basicaly what i would like to know is, what is the perpose if the rubber boot anyway, and more importantly, where is the oil coming from and why?

Thanks

that'
s your engine breather and if the bike has EVER been on it's side or in a fall - taht is where the oil goes!!!!

there is nothing the matter with that. you have a very small crankcase capacity which is why the bike is so light. the cummuppence is that the cases BREATH.

you're bike is fine and the oil will sink back to the engine. however, if the bike spends long enough upside down/on it's side the oil will go into the spine frame then dripm down to the back of the carb. just clean this area out and you should be ok.

the pilot and main air jets (PAJ and MAJ) breath and take air in at the bottom of the carb. they may be affetced but i found the biggest trouble wasn't the oil but the grit magnet that the oil becomes. now that i hate!

Taffy

Thanks Taffy,

I did an oil change just before i noticed this and had the bike on it's left handside so i could put in the filter and fill half up with oil as it say's in the manual. That must have caused the oil to get into the breather pipe.

Could you tell me where the weep hole is on my bike please, I've read about it on here and do have quite a bit of oil leaking/dripping from the engine. I've just taken the bike out for a spin and there is no more oil coming from the breather pipe, so i'm guessing it's from the weep hole. It seems to be collecting on top of the main oil filter housing and also running underneath the engine.

When i have the bike up right and look into the glass window, i can only see oil. I mean i can't see where the oil level is as it's above the top of the glass window. Does this mean i have too much oil in there?

Thanks

yes it sould be just visable in the bottom of the window
When cold, when warm it should rise to approx. half the window. What volume of oil do you add ? I use about 850 - 900 ml with no problems. Take care to not overfill...

SM bikes will blow out a signifficant amount of oil through the breather if overfilled due to the high rpms. I generally add 1 quart during oil changes (950cc) no more. Be sure to check your oil level often.
Your weep hole is next to where the radiator hose attaches to the water pump cover. You need to look at it from the front of the bike. It is a small hole that is usually not noted unless of course something is leaking from it.

i would jet wash the bike and run it and then stop it immediately. then take the fuel tank off and run it again for 2-3 minutes. they can leak oil from either of the engine breathers in the top of the engine or they can leak around the front left corner of the head.

least they used to on the '01s and '02s. i didn't think they did that laetr?

Taffy

mine is leaking oil from the the front left corner of the head, only noticed it yesyerday. Its an 04 fs650. Is this fixed with a retensioning of the head bolts or is something else the problem, gasket maybe?

Welcome to the fold SimonS,

If there is oil collecting on the oil filter housing it is not from the weep hole - as someone else says above the weep hole is just behind the coolant hose on the water pump.

You need to check the valve inspection cover gaskets and the the valve cover to make sure they're sealing properly. The inspection covers just need new gaskets the valve cover would need removing and resealing with a good high temperature silicon sealant.

As for your oil level - on an SM it is just fine to have a little too much oil - don't listen to these guys saying you should have less, that is a death sentence to an SM 650!

I was plagued with a racing season a few years ago that was full of big end failures on my 650 - the resolution was to add another 200 to 250ml so I was running with 1250ml. So make sure you have at least 1 liter in there. If it is at the top of the window, that is fine.

Hope this helps,
Simon
