Hi all,
Since today I am a proud owner of a Husaberg FE 390. The bike looks mint and can’t wait to take it out, absolute love it! Besides my Husaberg I ride a Montesa Cota 315r trails bike. IMO they make a nice match :D I will post some pictures when the rain has disappeared and look forward to be on this form!

I will give the bike a complete service just to be sure. I have the original books such as user manual with it. Are there any other workshop manuals out there?
I would love to have an overview with all the improvements you can make to the FE 390 so I can check whether they have been done or I can make them happen.

I also do have 3 questions regarding the bike:

  • The bike does start perfect but when cold you need to give it a bit of throttle when pressing the start button and keep it on a slight higher RPM for a couple of moments otherwise it will die. When I do not keep it idling long enough and I give it a sudden bit of throttle it cuts out also. One a bit warmed up no problem.

Edit: If found the cold start knob, and with that pulled out no problem at all so that’s it probably.

  • I think I hear a bit of a rattle when the engine idles, it seems to come from the left side of the engine. Might this be the valves? I have uploaded a youtube video of this. I’m new to the Berg’s engine sound so if someone of you guys can listen if it sound right, that would be awesome.

  • Does the FE 390 comes standard with indicators (EU) version 2010. Mine does have the turn signal decal on the switch but not the actual indicator switch.

Thanks!

Not a bad idea to check valve clearances also see timing chain is still good. Check all for fuel filters the 2 in the tank are pain also not a bad idea to get a sock at filler neck I take it even further I have funnel that filter down that water can't get in. This so all filters stay clean as long as they can.

I am going to give it a full service. How can I check if the timing chain is still ok? It has been changed already so has the piston at the same time.
But the engine sound sounds good I suppose, no tappet rattling or strange sounds from the timing chain tensioner (if that is even possible)?

Is the fuel sock the same one as the later Husky’s?

If the Timing chain tensioner is all the out. Fuel sock should be the same if fuel cap is same

Sounds like the cam chain tensioner is cooked.

Buy & install a Dirt Tricks unit ... it’s really easy to do (heaps on YouTube)

Problem solved

Fe390 info

I've owned a 2011 FE390 for 3 years now. The only upgrade I've done is bar risers (I'm 6'3" with a 34 inch inseam). I had a slow oil drip from the counter sprocket shaft - $80 for parts & labor. STARTING: these clutches "drag" until the oil is hot. When starting I always put the bike in neutral (hard to find with engine running) AND it needs a little throttle, especially when cold. (I never use the cold start.) When cold, and you go from neutral to first gear, the bike will try to lurch forward, and engine might die. I've been told by a dealer that they all this. Keep the front brake on when cold and going from neutral to first. LOTS better once the oil is at operating temperature. I really enjoy this bike - light, plenty of power for my dual sport riding. Just got back from a 5 day trip with 300 pavement miles and 3 days of dirt in Utah. Light, flickable, just a great trail bike - I think you'll love it, once you get used to the clutch thing. - (Ray in Southwest Colorado)

Thanks! I was suspecting the CCT, thanks for confirming that! Does DJH still sell their tensioners? I can’t find anything of them. Dirt tricks looks also perfect, any idea if the have a distributor in Europe or do I have to order from the USA?

Thank you for the improvement points for the Husaberg. I noticed the sticky clutch but I am a bit used to it as I also have a Montesa Cota 315r trails bike which wanted to launch you right off when engaging first. But after a clutch change with dimpled steel plates and the right Elf oil that problem has been solved.
I have to say when starting my husaberg without cold start it dies multiple times when trying to warm it up, that is a bit unfortunate but from now on I just express my love to the cold start knob :D
When a bit warm, you are right, engaging first isn’t a thing anymore, it is when trying to start in in first, feels like being on a impatient horse!!

I do not have a MAP switch on it as the previous (first owner) removed it when it didn’t worked anymore. Also some wires are cut. Any idea where I can find a repair manual and a good wiring diagram so I can restore it as it should be.

dirt tricks or simply undo the tensioner bolts by half a turn each and then re-tighten. it just has a job clicking sometimes!

Thanks!! That’s a big source of info, Perfect!
I did find the FE450 repair manual but Some wiring colors are off when comparing it with my FE390.
Any chance you might know how to get a FE 390 repair manual?

Thanks!

The manual (wiring) should be the same.

The engines in these Bergs are based off the KTM XC4 engine. Chase a chain tensioner for the same year KTM.

Many think the map switch doesnt work because they cant feel any difference between the three maps. Open up the airbox, free flow muffler and add a JD tuner. That will allow the maps to work better.
