hi guys, new to this site, excelent by the way, i thought i would share with you my experience of poor elec starting on a 02 501.no matter what i did it wouldnt start on the button but kicked first time,to cut a very long story short i have fitted a new stator, new 7 amp battery and the bob weight off a 04 onto my turned down 02 cam.it now spins over very fast and starts straight away even from cold.no problems as yet but will keep you posted.i hope this is the final solution.if anyone can envisage any problems because of this setup please let me know!cheers guys :)

the 7 amp battery-would that be the YTZ7S? this battery is known here and is very good as you suggest.

what is different about the '04 cam decomp? and what do you meanby 'turning the cam down'?

yesterday my bike was starting with my right hand on the negative battery terminal and my left only touching the leccy button.

no throttle-even just to catch the motor as it has started, also no decomp at all.

i only have the manual decomp on the left bar on my machine.

tell us more fella!

OABTW welcome-good to have you on board. do you race?

hi taffy ,yes i do race a little but nothing major or too serious just a bit of fun, front half clubman usualy.the battery is the same one and the main difference in the 02, 04 bobweights is that the 04 one has a higher profile and so decrompresses the exaust valve better.this has the effect of allowing the engine to turn over faster on the starter. the 02 weight had a tendancy to not compress the valve enough so the motor struggled to go over tdc, resulting in the starter stalling and a dead battery.klick klick klick weve all heard it. the problem is that the 04 weight is a few mil shorter than an 02 one.you could fit an 04 cam and weight (straight swop) but costs a bit ,weight £30-40, cam£150 ish.so to save a few(150) pounds i had a friend turn down on his lathe the end of the cam where the bobweight rests to the same size as the 04 cam. should be an easy job for a machine shop,no more than an hours billing,so about £30-40.i spent days at my local dealer trying things to sort the starting out and this seems to work .anything else you need to know just ask :) ps many thanks to gary at gary grover racing. great help, top bloke

stuner

Well sussed out Stunner and thanks for sharing that info with us! You are spot on with your thoughts.
I replaced my decomp mechanism aprox 9 months ago and after just replacing the sprag clutch it is now once again starting to get a "comp lock up" AGAIN due to the decomp mech wearing AGAIN. I am about to attempt to weld it with a higher profile to allow more than 30 tho lift. I will try to save some $$'s as I may need another stator or to have it rewired?
Hopefully this is your first and only problem, but I have a feeling we might hear from you again.

i think you're saying that we now have the KTM camshafts fitted to husabergs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can anyone here find the gallery photo for Stunner of the KTM/Husey camshaft. someone had scribed with a wobbly hand the difference between a katoom cam and one of 'ours'. stunner when they do, please look at the link and verify that we are 'probably' running katoom cams, rockers etc etc.

the lobe trick has been done here and is appreciated. if you go to race report you'll note how mine starts when warm. button, no decomp whatsoever, no throttle!

gary is definately a top man!

cut him in half and he's husaberg through and through!

regards

Taffy
