Need advice on new rear tire?

LeFrog and Husabutt beat me to it by a few days, but the X-11 trials tire is awesome (also pricey). It goes completely against logic to believe that this tire will outperform a knobby and I didn't believe it until I listened to Splatt and tried it. I've never pinched the X-11 in our rocks, although I got a flat at Moab, but then I'm old and slow and my little 'ole 501 is not a wailin' 5fiddy.

After reading your post i have been thinking about using a trials tyre in the rear.
Have you used it in muddy conditions and if so how does it perform?
A days riding trails in the north of England/Southern Scotland consists of mud, bogs/swamp, rocks, ice, snow and gravel forest roads and the odd dead sheep.
My only concern is deep mud. Will it fill up and spin the rear.

Your mates behind you will be pissed as the tire spits up rocks at an odd angle as in a flatter trajectory.
My friends have tried them with mixed results. Do not use them for any pavement if you can help it. They don't work worth sh*t in the mud and goop but on hard pack, rocks, boulders, gravel and forest floor and of course almost any dead animal, they're GRRRrrreat.

Oh yeah, about 1/4 of the lads were using trials tires at the Endurocross last month in Vegas.

Well I suppose the only way to find out is to try one. Just gotta wear out this Trelleborg first :D

Got round to trying a Michelin X-11 trials on the rear. Running at 9PSI.
Mixed reaction.

Started of on rocks and some steep rocky climbs, wow!! tracked straight as a die all the way, looked back and my mates were only half way up, it`s usually a race to the top. The problem on this particular climb with nobby tyres are wheel spin but the trials tyre never spun up once.Great. :D

Ruts. I hate riding ruts but the Michelin was wanting to climb out if i went of course. If i dipped the clutch it would sort itself. But if i rode a bit faster all was well, sort of. :?

Deep mud. OK if hit at speed, but if slowed down( by a friend and bike lying across the track 8O ) it soon bogged down and have to rev the nuts off to keep going and i could feel the mud stacking up on my helmet.

Short grass. Any speed this tyre rides no problem but this is where the rider got carried away and come to grief (no fault of the tyre). Earlier in the day my rear brake went soft, i had lost the face of one of the pads  So no rear brake, i managed ok after this set back with the front brake only. Anyway back to the story. We had to open a gate along this grassy track so i said i would shut the gate and catch them up at the next gate. Lets see how fast this tyre can go. Standing on the pegs leaning forward into the wind i was really going for it. Drifting the back out round a bend, Ohh sh*t forgot how close this gate was OHH SH*T again no rear brake, go for the front OHH SH*T for the third and last time as the front wheel locked up. In front of me where my mates totally unaware of this missile heading there way. Right i thought let the brake off and head for the gap and through the gate. It would of worked if one of my pals hadn`t decided to dismount. I clipped him at speed and glanced off towards a dry stone wall. Now this was a wide tall well built wall, i didn`t have time to say OHH SH*TE and just went BANG instead.
This wall didn`t budge in inch. I suppose it could have been worse. My mate was jumping up and down holding his thumb and swearing at me. I thought hey got of lightly there just a bad tempered friend then i could hear the rest of my so called friends pissing them selves with laughter and one of them holding two large bit of front fender up.
:violin:
My pal was ok but i was gutted my lovely new bike was all beat up and we had to ride some really wet tracks after that with no front fender. At the end or the day i was soaked through and covered in mud :(

Anyway the new tyre seems ok except for deep mud, the rocky trails in the north of Scotland should be great for this tyre but i will have to watch that throttle hand :?
