Having been off the road for the last 2 weeks trying to sort a starting problem (in amoungst looking after my family) I finally got it all back together.

Started 1st tough of the button - smiles all over. went out. Stopped at mates / started staright away off the button. Went out in my field with my lad on hos KX. Stopped to let a horse out - wouldnt bloody start again.

I'm really fed up with this and about to part the bike on e-bay (couldn't sell it as a goer).

This is new - usually hard to start - fine when hot. This was fine wher fresh - wont start when hot.

The recent works were full strip down of carb - clean stator - new HT lead & cap - new plug DCR8eix.

Idle screw out 2.5 turns - mixture screw out 1.75 turns.

Perhaps I've just got a bad bike.

If I do bin it but want to stick with Bergs, what year & model would you recommend / enduro at a reasonable 2nd hand price.

they gotta be lean to start when hot............. chin up and wind in the pilot screw.

if all else fails nick your nippers kx

The electronics control box may work well enough when its hot to keep the engine running, but not well enough to start.

Disassemble and clean all connections. Those too can get iffy when hot.

Have you got a rewound stator in there or the standard SEM?
Sounds very SEM - ish.

Thanks for the comments / the point is how far do you go before you say enough & get a bike that works. Had a drink with Grasstrackpete / Taffy & plumbob in the lounge last night - will try new needle & atomizer and wind in the air screw to lean it off a bit. (Also clean up all the connections again and fit a new IX plug). Failing that - may move onto the stator....or may not. Will keep you posted. Cheers.

Just keep going mate, its YOUR bike, you could just be buying a load of someone elses problems if you get another, stick with it, we will help.

Hi All, Regards from New Zealand.
In regards to the Husaberg brand, I am going to get ***** for this but reliability........ ****, pure fun factor (Running) cant beat them.
Maintenance,- Excessive
Quality, - somewhere between mashmallow and rubiks cube...
They overheat, have no oil feed to the top end, blow big ends, **** main bearings and for me last 30 hours betwen rebuilds (at $3-4.5K a pop.
I have bigger air scoops, a fan, Mobil 1 4 t oil, oil change every 5 hours, but it still ***** itself.
Just about to pull down my 06 FE550 (Again) , spent $4k so far in 9 months, about to spend another 2-3K what gives????????
I only ride on sand, tight and open trails.
My irc 140-80-18 MC5 has lasted 60 hrs (twice as long as the motor) .
So I want to get rid of this lemon but no one will trade it because of know relaibility issues!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FRUSTRATED......
Anyone got a complete cheap running motor?

My 98 501 has 33,000 km with one top end rebuild at 6000 km after a valve seat disintegrated. A new cam and followers at 10,000 km after using Mobil 1 4T since new, Delo 400 since 10,000 km with the new valve gear and no mechanical expenditure since and still out grunts 450s, but not my 650. May not be your answer, but might help, DELO 400 for me!

Steve

i have a 550 motor here same money pit story ending in a fire and an almost free jap bike, when I pulled out the crank it was twisted 0.1 and spread so the runout between centres was 0.2mm. it was setup with a ball LHS and roller RHS but the roller failed from having the equivalent of zero end float. this was the third set of failed mains on that bike. the rolller was an NJ could have been an NU (no inner lip)

maintenaence well Ive only had to adjust valves 3 times in 170 hrs, but this other bike has had 3 sets of new valves. don't get that one unless they were always set out of spec?

between the 550 and the 628 crank I reckon the 628 is way stronger and 250gm lighter, piston lighter too. if crank stiffness vaires with the 4th power pin diameter then 628 is near twice as stiff, made of stronger forged steel and as its lighter it has less flexing loads.

for a 550 Id weld the pin true the crank to at least 0.01 and polish the crank to a slip fit on the ID of the mains and run 2 c3 ballbearings. but thats just MHO may not work even for me :)

weed has built a strong 644 which has a heavy crank made even heavier by his balance weights and its got a little pin so there's no reason why you couldn't do the same. Its all just metalurgy and aligment no matter if it comes from honda or yamaha or the bergs. if it keeps breaking theres summout the matter wif it, need to work out what the problem is and fix it.

MHO is if your killing 550 mains you need to get a nice true crank with a welded pin and run ball mains or buy a 628. 170hrs on mine and mains look near perfect , delo400 with 10% moreys. the 550 had a diet of motul AFAIK so fancy oil doesn't help if things aren't spot on.

overheating ? Ive thrashed mine on beach runs in 44 degC no overheating

but yes no 550's for me I break stuff too much

there's a 550 running down the K ebay and i reckon it won't make big money. londonderry in northern ireland means that whatever happens it'll be transported at cost over to the mainland putting the Uk off.

so it might be worth a punty. have a word with him?

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

So, about to go off to the shed AGAIN and do the reps mentioned above..

But tell me again --why do we stick with bergs.......

Please lets close this thread with 1/2 dozen posts telling us why bergs are the best - ridden by the best people - with the coolest chicks (wives & partners included where applicable).

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

we do it because we think all uncared for bergs sould have a home.

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

We do it because bergs arent like that mass produced rubbish other people buy, Bergs have soul ! They sound the best, feel the best and make you feel glad to be alive.
They get the most looks, still look awesome 20 years on and they pull the fittest birds by a country mile ....
Ive never grinned as much on any other bike than i did when i first rode my berg, i'll never forget it.

That ok arkley ? :)

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

Taffy - Sorry - not good enough.

On-one- wheel - Good. Keep em coming. Went down the community centre last week to drop something off - came out - massive crowd admiring - esp as I got there off road & was covered in mud - luckily it started. (Didn't later though).

My 501 is the only enduro or big bore thumper I've ever ridden. I have to know that I would miss it too much if I went for a ktm or honda (sorry to swear).

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

Wash your mouth out man !!

honestly though, the husa is my only bike ive had thats had that much attention in such a short space of time. I pulled up with two mates one day at a local bike meet place and my mates CBR600RR didnt even get a look in, even though he's splashed a mint on it on top of buying it !! he asked me for the key so he could walk over and put it in the ignition pretending it was his, i just grinned at him. right then i knew i'd made the right choice !

I cant get over the whistle they have, sounds proper racey and nothing sounds as sweet !

The hours of cursing, skinned knuckles, brews, cold, sulking sessions, outlashes and generally feeling down about the state of the bike, just makes me fall in love even more when it all comes together. It's all forgotten in one twist of the throttle and a big smile from an admiring motorist :D

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

Yeah I know, thats what happened last week - see start of thread - the feeling for 1 hour was fantistic - up the road, through the woods - down the lane - but............................all weekend for 1 hour & now I'm doing it again....just done the carb with Taffy's new bits - arrived swiftly (that'll be a drink you owe men Taf) come in to get my iridium plug and should be out and about this afternoon................or...............no...this is it...this will be the adjustment that really sorts it out and makes me trust it......catch you later.

RE: Re: RE: Nearly had enough

mate of mine just rebuilt his stock YZ after only 30 hrs. new barrel, piston rings and valves etc.

get a silly lil jap 450 to make 63 horses and see how long it lasts ha. I beielve the 450s in the aus safari get new bits washed down with motul300v 3 times a day. Gazzas getting his bike through 5000km with nothing.....

the only postive thing about the jap bikes I can't get get with my berg is the 100kg flickability and space age suspension internals.

the rest of it is fixable I think...if it needs fixing. part of the fun doing all the fixing. I had an ultra reliable jap bike for 10 years... was boring to ride.. no power and boring to own since I couldn't justify pulling it apart for nothing. so up the power up the fun and go the bergs..

Bushie
