Motor on 04 FE650 locked up today.

Hair
Sorry about your mess but its worth the trouble and when done youll have another 150 hours or so
While you have it down can you please show some pics of your cooler set up. I am really wondering what you are using for a filter if you have taped into the filter housing.

Top end on mine is going to be replaced mid January as soon as my boy goes back home.

the motor would be full of metal filings .. 100 hours on a cam chain with no tension . the cam chain tensioner fully extends at 50 hours or less . you would hear the cam chain rattle .

I also have an 08 KTM 530 EXC. I know what cam chain rattle sounds like. I recently replaced the 530 tensioner with one from Dirt Tricks. It's better. But the berg makes no noise at all. It's always been very quite. Also the rest of the chain seems to be in very good condition. Just one link came apart.

I'll pull the right cover and have a look. I really hope that the bottom end is good. I can't afford that much work right now.

Taffy, Over here in Los Alamos we do one thing. And we do it well.

sir ... at 150 hours i would expect to hear cam chain rattle .. at that point the tensioner would be at full extension , the cam chain would be worn out . maybe thats why it broke . or am i missing summink here ?. i had the DID chain in mind when i mentioned the 50 hour mark ,the 04 chain is a higher quality . sometimes its hard to hear the cam chain rattle due to the berg engine noise ..

Cam chains don't fall apart for no reason - even if they are worn.
I'd be looking for a top end failure more than bottom end. If the bottom locked the chain would just stop not break.
Covers off and check it all out thoroughly.
Get yourself an IWIS chain and I'd replace the top end bearings as well - both rockers and cam.
At 200 hrs they'll be rooted.

camchains don't break even when knackered. you ge human error ad people who replace an old link with a new one. that's the error.

ever meet anyone who admitted that they phucked up?

regards

Taffy

Wow, so this is the maintenance schedule huh? Guess I'm going to get to know my bike pretty well, I kind of like that, kind of not...

I'm sure you're all going to tell me that this kind of maintenance is worth the ride on a 'Berg and I'm sure it is, I'd just like to avoid situations like Hair's if possible, and I know there will be inevitable ones, but any other tips like Wildman's?

Change your oil lots, look for metal and listen for noises.
If any magnetic bits start appearing then go investigating - start with the top end.
