ok trying to cross a gnarly lake of a mud puddle and dumped her in the drink... got it to finaly start and ran fine for 20 seconds then blew a big puff of blue smoke out her ***.. shut her down checked the oil level and was nill at best.... blown top-end ???? if its blown can anybody tell me where to get a rebuild kit from ??????? help...
 
In time you will learn A) Dont get into that situation again or B) Modify the breather by routing it to atmosphere with the aid of a filter. There are few posts that address the "breather mod". I opt for "A".
 
thanks... i sure appreciate your help... i thought for sure i blew it up..... i'll make an effort to keep her upright...
 
Hi Radar,

I had a similar thing happen to me this last year while doing some jetting testing on my 04 550.

I was making some high speed, or main jet passes on a dry lake bed. My stock breather hose had cracked and was leaking, so I made up a temporary set up with 5/8" T and some heater hose, and connected it directly to the little periscope thingy where it attaches to the frame. At the end of my second pass (102mph on the stock speedo) the bike started to sputter so I backed out of it a few seconds early. As I rolled to a stop the bike idled down and quit. Then would not restart. I thought for sure I had blown the engine up.

I tried to start it a couple more times with the kicker and my buddy noticed that it was puffing smoke. I pulled the air cleaner and found the air boot loaded with oil, as well as the bottom side of the air filter itself was splattered with oil. I did as Berger suggested and sopped up the oil with a rag, and replaced the plug, and drained the float chamber.

She fired right up and I finished the days riding, probably another 60 miles or so without a hitch.

What happened was that with my temporary breather set up did not have the reticulated foam, and the ability to allow the oil mist to condense and run back down the breather because of it's size. So it was just blowing all that oil mist right up into the back bone of the frame. A few of the Super Moto guys have had similar problems when running extended periods of high revs. This can also happen if you're revving it hard and have a bit too much oil in the motor as well.

I'm sure all is well. Just clean up those things that Berger suggested and you should be worry free.

Ken forgot to offer the third option, which is always ride with someone competent and willing to do this for you on the trail. I can't imagine why he would neglect to offer this suggestion.

He might not have suggested it because I abused the privilege and he is no longer willing :D Instead he put me on a Husky the next time. I know for a fact that they don't have the same problem when upside down, so maybe that could be option 4 :)

Ken saved my ride once as well. Issue was not oil contamination but a bad spark.

I say he is good to have around.

Radar, check my gallery for an easy way to do the mod. It was done by the former owner (Bobzilla) and I have not touched it. Since then people have used different methods (Lineweaver, Husabutt, Bobzilla), usually with a PCV valve. But what I got seems to be the easiest and as long as you have some type of foam filter in the breat, you should be fine.

Can also happen after a trip over the hangers on a downhill, if you leave the bike up that way long enough while you re-compose yourself, the oil will leak down the breather and then be ingested as Dale EO suggests.

When it happened to me I was shittin' myself trying to find whatever I had broken or damaged - it cleared after a while, only now I know exactly what caused it.
