I have taken the manual decompressor off as I've never used it. My question is what do you do with the spring on the cylinder head? Do you leave it under the bolt head or do you unclip it and let the arm dangle free?
That would seem to indicate that what I do with the spring is irrelavent. without the manual lever and cable does the cam actually do anything to the device?

Without the sping holding the decompression valve lifter in the "off" position if you will, it may just flop around causing slight decompression once in a while.
I would remove the rocker cover and completely remove the decompression valve lifter replacing it with a bolt and nut to fill the cavity.
In that case, for the time being leaving the spring on will force the lifter into the off position and is better than unclipping it. When I get a chance I can then remove it and put a bolt on. Essentially it doesn't sound too crucial to the running of the bike or bike starting. I'm having electric starter problems and trying to cover all the bases.
the spring should be disconnected or else it is hammering into the rocker arm all the time. you can leave it on if the manual decomp is adjusted correctly and if that is also disconnected then you should defo unhook the spring.
this is the old 50MX i did last summer. i do the same for the crankcase but i'm buggered if i can find a photo...!
