I have old Husaberg FC501 1991. Engine start easy and run nicely but middle and top-end power is lost. Low rev rpm engine is strong but that's it. Fuel is new, and carb is std setting. If I increase speed and close throttle I can hear some back fire. My opinion is fire timing is late, but how I can check it? Or, maybe cam timing is wrong, but how it check? I bought this bike two days ago (yes, very cheap) and engine is total rebuild. I'm sorry, my English is poor, but I'm from Finland 8)

one easy thing to check before you disassemble the top end is to pull the main jet from the carb and see if it is close to what it should be (around 180). then i would assume this bike sat for awhile with evaporated gas clogging the jets. take a short (3-4 cm)piece of small braided wire and pull one strand from it. use this wire to clean out the bore of the main jet in case there is a film buildup. do the pilot as well if you can find a wire small enough. i have had these same symptoms from a ktm that sat for awhile.

your ignition timing should be checked with a strobe light. the maximum advance should be 36-40 degrees BTDC. i would rev the engine until the advance stops 'flickering' then it's usually at it's maximum.

to do the cam timing you must get the engine to TDC and then remove the rocker cover. the cam lobs should be exactly symettrical like 'mickey mouses ears'.

it's all in the doc BTW!

Taffy
