Well I just bought myself an old 501. It started and ran great when I looked at it. Bought it the next day and I can't for the life of me get it to fire up! Granted, this is my first dirt bike and certainly my first kickstarter, but it seems like an electrical issue. I pulled the plug and I'm not seeing any spark. I tested the stator and got red-ground 1550 ohms (norm is 1750?) and green-ground 100 ohms (norm is 23?). During my hundreds of kicks I occasionally get a nice gunshot out of the pipe - I'm assuming this is the occasional plug firing while the valves are open. I'm a noob, but I'm guessing that the stator is bad. Is there anything else I should check or take into account? I don't get why it started in two kicks before I bought it and I can't seem to get anything...grrr  Also, how is the plug wire supposed to connect to the box under the frame? I pulled the rubber cap off and it seems that there is a pin in the box that just kind of jams into the copper wiring within the plug wire...Is that the norm?

Thanks guys

Yes the plug wire just screws in.
My guess is the bike runs, you just do not know how to start it. Try this stating technique.
Cold-
Pull the choke.
Pull in the manual decompression device on the bars.
Open the throttle.
Kick the motor through 5 times with the throttle open and the decompression lever held in.
Bring the motor up to TDC.
Release the decompressor and throttle.
Kick it through smoothly and briskly. Make sure the kick start lever is all the way up, don't cheat it. Stand over the bike with your right foot planted on a milk crate or something similar so you can get a good full kick at it.
Mine would usually start on the second kick. If it does not start by the fifth kick, repeat the whole process.
If you smell fuel either in general or through the exhaust, remove the choke and repeat from the beginning.
Hot-
Same as cold only no choke.
Make sure you give it the mandatory 5 kicks with the throttle open and decompresser on. This will clear it out . Make sure to do this regardless of how long it has been shut off whether it be 20 seconds or 20 minutes.

Thanks, I'll try it, but I don't have a manual decomp lever. Just the automatic one.

what i do to cold start my auto decomp only bike is:

turn on the kill switch ( push it to the right)
turn on the choke,
slowly kick the bike through 3-4 times
find tdc (the highest pressure point) and very slowly go farther past it than i think i should till it falls into a notch
let the lever come up till it cant get any more 'bite'
balance myself
and lastly jump on that lever like you mean it

I though the fc's has a cable decomp (i thought, i do not know just make sure your not missing something on the right side of the head or something)

if i remember right both of my good stators ohm out at 1550ohms i would look elsewhere for the problem

check you other wiring first, obviosuly with out spark it cant run so it sounds like an issue:cheers:

I did some more testing particularly with the plug and managed to get it to spark, but it was weak and inconsistent, so I replaced it and for good measure wiggled the plug wire around for a more secure fit on both ends (they seemed flimsy). Two kicks later it roared to life! :bounce3:

Thanks guys for the help on starting procedure. I'm sure I ruined the original plug with my many first kicks as a newbie. But I think I'm a pro now

Hi, well your not alone. I also bought a 98 FC 501 bike. It would start up fine then at times not. Since I had just got the bike and hadn't really serviced it or done anything with the bike, I thought I should do that. I finally found a dealer here in Fresno, Ca that could and would service the bike. I talked to a guy named Brandon at Wilson's Motorcycles and that's where I took my bike. A week later I went to pick it up and they couldn't get it started. Brandon's boss at Wilson's showed up later and started it in 4 kicks. The next day I went back and Brandon's boss explained to me the starting procedure on the Husaberg. Rule #1 never work the throttle, it will never start. Rule #2 is a bit hard to explain but I'll try. You know when your kicking the bike like a 2 stroke and the kick stops hard and feels like it comes back on your foot, kinda hurts a bit without boots? There happens to be a specific stroke in which they start. Another key element I was forgetting is the strokes of the kick must follow through. So when you are slowly pushing the kick start and feel the kick to get really stiff, push a tad past that point, let the kick come all the way to the top and kick it all the way through or to the bottom. It's only the last or bottom of that stroke that fires the engine. I'm a bit rusty myself at the starting because I just went for a ride and kept missing the stroke and flooded the bike. Rule #3 is to be sure you kick all the way through from the top and to find the stiff spot in the stroke, push a tad past. let the kick come back to the top and kick all the way through. Hope that helps you.

You guys that buy 'kick only' Husabergs deserve some kind of award. They are foul. I've owned a bunch of Bergs and all of them have been electric start and every one of them would start within two rotations without fail. I have a bunch of pieces and parts laying around, but the only complete bike i have left is a '98 FX600 and even though i haven't ridden in in about three years i can walk into my garage and it'll start immediately after i turn the gas back on....I always drain the gas (petrol) when its going to sit awhile.
So i didn't have anything to really add to the conversation except to say that i wouldn't ever get a Berg that didn't have the button. You are a better man than I.

is that the same one we kicked and kicked and kicked at the end of the wash at the '05 phoenix berg ride? (until you realized the switch was in the wrong position)
hi dez, glad to see yer still here. i don't ride much anymore either. those bad tickers aren't any fun

Ned,
Excellent memory! Yes, it was pure and simple operator error and i appreciate that you pointed that out.
Sure good to hear from you, keep that "ticker" ticking.

Whats the spark plug? Mine didnt come with one in it and the E3 36 Ebay gave me is too big

Ok good to know. Thanks. It appears the threads on mine are damaged which would be why could not get plug to start in.
