Bobzilla and Berger, report to sick bay... Time for your injury report!

Well, here is my status: it's been 4 weeks since I flew over the bars at the 11-mile wash. No cast, just a sling and a bottle of pain pills, which I never refilled, and I am glad I did not.

The pain from the fracture subsided after two weeks but I am still unable to put my arm over my head. I saw the orthopedist today and he told me it looked nicer already but one more month before light work. I will start physiotherapy this week.

I guess I will have at least 2 more weeks to work on the bike!

Well, next time, I will not forget to stand up right away out of a turn.

Recuperation sure does suck.
I had a broken elbow but was able to ride in less than 3 weeks, against Dr's orders mind you. It took about a full year before everything was back to normal. Physio blows but ya have to do it.

Good luck!

One more week untill I can dump the sling. Supposedly 3 months more untill I'm released from doctors care. We will see.

Standing on the pegs is essential for the sandy terrain we were in Froggy. The more you stand, the better control you have over your bike. I have found it really helps to try to squeeze the bike with your inner knees and thighs while standing on the pegs. This helps with body english and becoming one with your bike instead of just being a passenger. You'll get the hang of it with practice. Hope you're back on the trails soon.

Hey Rick, it was intially diagnoised as a SLAP tear and slight rotator cuff tear in the left shoulder. When they got in there they found the rotator cuff was not as bad as the thought but the SLAP tear was substancial. Basicaly they sink two screws in the shoulder bone where the biceps mucle attaches and reattach the labrum to it using sutures.

woo-hoo i didn't know you got hurt ken? which thread was that on? i didn't even get to pull your leg over it!!!

tell us more or give me a link. i needs to know man!

speedy recovery fella!

regards

Been that way for quite awhile, I was riding with it that way at Moab, in fact that may have done it in. That and I was riding with a sprain LCL in the right knee and a blown disc L1/S5 in Moab. I try not to whine too much. Im trying to take advantage of this time off and get healthy again.

Well I've been walking with a cane in the air cast for the past two weeks and even in the house with nothing at all for the past week but being careful. I go to the doctor next Tuesday and then he will tell me if I can start bearing weight on it then.

I think I will be ok within a week or so if the bone has mended. I am pretty sure that I will not be able to leave the plate and screws in on this repair. They are just too close to the surface and I can see the plate and feel the screws. I am sure it will be uncomfortable to wear a shoe with the plate on the outside of my ankle. I have some hardware in my shoulder and knee but it doesn't really bother me much.

John called me last night to invite me on a ride to Gerlach on the 29 of April so I think that will be my first real ride. I hope to get in the gym by March 20 and start to build strength. With the air cast I have been able to take it off and gain range of motion in my ankle so that wont be too bad.

I am going to try and have the ride to Austin again on Fathers day if the snow is off enough. You all are invited. Brenden had a good time last year and I think Dez would like to try again.

Remember all you broke guys get no pain no gain in Phys therapy . Don't be a sissy just biker up and do the exercises.

Broke the ankle part of my Tech 8's, the boot bends easy at the ankle sideways now. Any body tried the Sidi boots? they look like they got good ankle support.

Bob,

I ride with the Sidi Force SRS boots and like them alot. They have lots of good motion from front to back for walking and such but the side to side motion seems to be quit good. I have never put them to the test in an accident but when needed I hope they will do the job. I hope you, and the rest of the walking wounded, a speedy and well mended recovery.

Regards,

Hi Bob,
I'll bet you're getting bored hanging around the house in an air cast. Sounds like you won't let the injury slow you down once you've gone through the physical therapy. Great approach Mr. Zilla! Here's to a speedy recovery and more time with the lil' 550. She needs to learn who's boss don't ya think?

November 6 '05 broke 4 ribs crossing log on trials bike.
Three months later rebroke same 2 lower ribs on same section.
Last week riding 450 slapped ground with foot in rocky turn smackin bars with buddy--rebroke bottom 2 again. I guess you are supposed to let them heal.

Not enough bandwidth on this system to list all my (crash related) woes, just suffice to say the last time (2 weeks ago) my ortho guy was assessing my progress (or lack thereof) he said when I finally "check out" that he wants me to donate my remains to science, science fiction! (I literally set off the sensors at the airport!) A side note +1 on the Sidi's, I was always an A-Stars boot guy, but just got a new pair of Sidi supermoto boots and they're the best I've ever worn, comfort, protection, etc.
Cheers,
(Chicago SUCKS, I can't wait to come home to the Bay Area!)

I've caught my foot on curbing and ruts as well the bike has lowsided on them numerous times....two thumbs up for the SIDI's

I have to say that I am very satisfied of my Fly Talon boots. They provide good protection of the malleoli. I fell in the sand and twisted my ankle at more than 90 degrees, my son thought for sure I broke my foot when indeed I did not feel a thing because the entire leg had rotated. The boot was trapped inside the bike.

Yes, I have a problem in the sand, or so it seems, very interesting for someone who lives in the desert.

Hey Bobzilla, you need to keep using the cane even after you heal. It will complete your pimp daddy look! :D Bob and John's Austin ride is one of the best rides I have done. Those who do not go, are really going miss out. Their rides will make you never want to see another OHV type area ever again.

My formerly broken collar bone feels at about 95%, and I plan on doing my second enduro (clear creek wild boar) since my accident this weekend. I hope I finish! My physical therapy consisted of walking to and from work, and riding a trials bike. You should try it, it really works!

Oops I did not know so many people were injured or recovering from injuries... I think it usually takes a full year to fully recover from common fractures.

Brendan, collar bones heal well, I gave myself a complete clavicle fracture trying to emulate Alberto Tomba. Did not prevent me from playing front line rugby after that.

Bones are amazing.

Add to the report:
I went down during practice day at SpeedworldMX park. Railing WOT third gear around the start turn, the bike went down (slid-out). I hit my left side hard, fractured my helmet, light concusion, black and blue left ear, torn and sprained muscles in my shoulder and back and three stiches in the little finger. They kept me in the emergency room for eight hours. The doctor finally gave me some Morphin which only eased about half the pain. They gave me some Vicodin which didn't ease the pain very well. I used up one week of sick days (could not get out of bed). Three weeks later I am doing fine and another three weeks for full recovery. It is a slow healing process. :(

Ouch!!!! I just can't do MX tracks anymore. Way to easy to get hurt.

Get well soon!!
