How to repair a dent in alu tank?

I was brazing the bottom of a Mini Moke tank years ago, rusted through, removed and upside down, flushed with exhaust gas then and full of water. It blew and scared the **** out of me. Easy to finish then, as definitely no fumes left!!

For safety reasons, go for the heat/flame free options first. Safety is No1.

If I was religious I'd pray you never get a truly positive test.

well, apart from Taffy not properly reading who said 'heat', and who, if anyone split a tank before it even happened, i dont think there was anything but robust discussion.

Thnaks Bundy, for the vote of confidence,(and i typet that after a fair few, i must have more restraint than i thought!

there is a fairly simple principle in play with the core matter though, that is take it easy, when you are playing with a $800.00 omero tank, or anything else for that matter, take it easy, go slow, and work on the way you do things, to get it right. thers no point backing a bolt off half a turn once you have stripped it!

take time, the easiest fix isnt allways the best!

Hannu, its not too late to do the freezer thing, but be aware it could also split it. im sure you have put a drinking water bottle in the freezer to get it chilly and left it too long, its easy to see the extent that ice expands from water, if the dent is small take it easy, if it is big, then it might take a couple of goes, increasing the water volume before its out properly. shame you probably have witness marks where it was dinged out now, same happens with expansion chambers often.

I dont know about heat and pressure in this application, because of the aluminium, you could end up with a big hole melted where the dent is very easily.

i read it fine, you mentioned "pressure" and how you didn't like it. i figured you didn't like my opinion, at the time this was the only answer hannu had had so you MUST have been on about my reply.

and then you finish with this:

well, apart from Taffy not properly reading who said 'heat', and who, if anyone split a tank before it even happened, i dont think there was anything but robust discussion.

and after all this?

Hannu, its not too late to do the freezer thing, but be aware it could also split it.

most un aussie like but not of my making

Well, Taff, I will reply honestly, and I hope that the moderators will not remove it, so pull your f..... head in and read the entire thread in sequence:

in my first post, i said straight out that the worst case scenario would be increasing capacity of the tank or splitting it (so re-read my first post) i was also flagging that heat could melt it.

now i stand by my statement that it's not too late to push the dent, but the risk exhists that it will still split, that is the way it is when giving advice only and not controlling the work yourself, there are things that can go wrong!

any way, very Australian i reckon, i told it straight and gave my reasoning, there was no flippancy in my suggestion.

Take it easy, face it you didnt read it well, and Hannu can still rescue it, though it will be a bit uglier now if he has dented the tank.
