Hello

Just wonder if you guys can give me a tip how to kick start my fe650e 2001 mod. when the engine its cold. The dealer started it up at a couple of kicks, and I need more like 50. I assume there is some trick to this.

I would also like to thank the person that give me the answer on my previous question: 600 VS 650, I ended up with the Fe650s. A nice KTM killer...

Thanks

well i had to kick start my fe600 in the mornings for a bit when the battery died all i did was put the choke on take it to tdc and gave it 3 good kicks took the choke off and take just past tdc and give it an allmighty kick and would usuall start then or the next one hope that helps

cheers doug

Here is my drill cold.
Pull the choke out.
Pull in the decompression lever.
Kick through 5 complete revolutions, no throttle.
Bring it up to TDC.
Release the decompression lever and kick it like a man.
It usually starts 1st or second kick.
If it does not start by the 3rd kick.
Release the the choke and start over.
It usually starts 1st or 2nd kick.

When warm.
Pull in the decompression lever.
Kick it through 5 times, closed throttle.
Bring it up to TDC
Release the decompression lever and kick it like a man.
It will usually start 1st time, if not repeat entire procedure.

When really Hot.
Same as above but open the throttle on the 5 pre kicks, close throttle to start.

It took me a year and a half of cussing and heavy breathing to come up with this drill.
I hope it works for you.

The best advice I can give is to start the bike on a stand ( when cold ), and I don't mean side stand. This will allow you to concentrate on the kicking action and learn the habits of your motor, as well as training your leg for the action of the lever, which is certainly awkward at first. once you learn " the routine " of your motor then starting when standing will become much easier.

best of luck

Thank you guys

That was helpful, now i can start it it only 10 to 15 kicks. I think my problem was that i was off TDC. Now I need only more practice...

Karl,
The critical motion is to follow through. Don't cut your kicks short. Get as high up starting the kickstart shaft at approximately 1:00 o'clock and follow through to 6:00. Maintaining a strong and steady push through 4 and 5 o'clock is crucial.

javo,
The above advise is neither year or model specific. It should be good for all. The best advise would be to get the starting procedure from the previouse owner.

Berger & fryguy are completely right! First and for most learn the drill! Berger explained it well. fryguy is completely right about using a bike stand or what I do is to start it while it either on the truck or triple rail trailer straped in place. I will not remove my from the truck of trailer untill it has started. And for you E button people. "It's a restarter!" Save your starter & battery it will thank you and work when you need it ! Learn the drill!

And when you get the drill really sorted it is even possible to start them with your hand when they're warm

:D :D :D Only tree kicks, and its running.
I was yesterday at the road racing track , now that is serious fun. Little hard to pass the 1000cc gixxers on the strait, but kind of fun to beat them in late breaking and cornering speed.

RE: good news, Karl!

Hi Karl,

Super glad to hear that your bike is getting sorted out!

thanks,

My starting drill:

1- Turn on key
2- Pull choke
3- Say a short prayer
4- Kick five times with no expectation of it starting
5- Push choke in
6- Rub tank gently, while saying "Come on baby, lets go for a nice ride".
7- Kick five times from TDC, throttle closed.

It should start.

If it doesn't, continue to step 8.

8- Pull choke
9- Rub tank gently, saying "Now come on, you know I treat you right. Lets go for a nice RIDE"!
10- Kick five times from TDC, throttle closed.

It should start.

If it doesn't, continue to step 11.

11- Lean down close to the engine. Reach in and massage the side of the cylinder, feigning some obscure adjustment to the carb while saying "Look. Smitty's over there laughing his *** off while his EXC is warming up. PLEASE. Lets go for a NICE RIDE NOW"!
12- Kick five times from TDC, throttle closed.

It should start.

If it doesn't, go to the ice chest, drink a beer then go back to step 1 and repeat.

If at any point the engine makes an attempt to fire - BLAA..Ba...ba - stroke the tank gently while using only encouraging words.

This procedure has never failed to either start the bike or get me drunk before a ride.

Best of luck.

   Ken R, you've got the best starting procedure I've ever seen!   Always a good idea to give your Husey a bit of optimistic coaching instead of swear words. I usually save the coolies till after the ride but I'll keep your option open next time I go out to the trails and my bike decides to give me fits on cold starting. Thanks for the tips!

Log

I don't see what all the pissing's about. Mine always starts on the last kick!!!

I agree with log, I'm sitting here laughing so hard I am crying. All the clowns walking by my cube think I'm nuts!!!!

KenR,

As I sat hear reading your post I could hardly keep myself from pissing myself in laughter.

The funny, or not so funny, part about it is that at one time or another most Berg owners have been in your very shoes.

Thanks so much for your kick starting regiment as I will follow it to the "T" the next time I encounter such a predicament.

Karl, I have to agree with 70marlin though, "LEARN THE DRILL".

Years ago there was a spoof done on a comedy show regarding the mighty range of Wynns products. One of theirs was a can of "Wynns Start Ya *******". I remember the bloke doing the demo thing exactly as would have been done by Mr Wynns himself on a lawn mower but cursing & swearing on each pull of the cord. The next step if that did not work was to use a can of "Wynns For Christ's Sake Come On". I think the next step upon failure of that was similar to KenR's that involved beer.

Whenever one of us has trouble starting a bike there is always some smartarse remark asking if anyone has the above products.

Sorry I can't add much other than learn to kick it strongly for the full stroke of the lever, preferably from the seat with your left leg. The procedure for positioning the crank, choking, throttling & tweaking almost gets to be a personal religion and will be affected by so many things that few will recommend the exact same, even on similar bikes.
