Friends,

There are scattered bits of info in this forum posted by Dale L. , mikst and others regarding the new 450 MX by Highland, Sweden. I will simply try to put all I know about this into one place since I am so curious.

First, here is their website, where most of this info can be found, including some AVI´s and pics of this bike:
HIGHLAND
For those who want to get right to the beef, here it is:
450 MX Spec

For you who haven´t heard about this, the basic reason why it belongs here is that mr Larsson, who is responsible for the original Husaberg design also has his hand in this one as is quite obvious looking at it.

Here is the real kick though:
You can (as I did) place a call to Highland (phone # off their website) and talk directly to them. No screening. Not even a receptionist...!
I found out (and so could you) that this 450 is still in preproduction run. They will vigorously look for a good driver for the ´06 swedish MX series, since they are very serious about entering the MX-market.

The release will happen sometime mid to late ´06, but an enduro version will be about a year later due to mechanical differences and regulations for street use. I also asked them whether a 250 would be coming, but no firm plans have been made. On the question of pricing, they say they will be competitive, so this is no "luxury brand". They are firmly set to enter the market for regular mx bikes (and enduro).

Some of the components, like castings, will be made in China, so my hope is that this time they will be profitable and able to hold on to it.

Some short facts:

450cc DOHC (finally in my opinion)
56,4 hp @ 8500rpm
Fuel injection (again...finally)
No high-tension wiring, coil on spark plug. (but SAAB was first, 15 years ago...)
Alu frame
103 kg with std electric start (and battery...)
Öhlins equipped
200W electrical std.
Lower CG than competitors. (claimed)

I just think this is cool, but for now I am way happy with my 501FE.

Greetings from southern Sweden

Pete

Hi Aspen,
Highland is much like early Husaberg, both good and bad. :D

The family tree:
Husqvarna
Husaberg
Folan
Highland

Mats Malmberg is the primary shareholder.
Just ring em up and ask for Mats, tell him Dale sent ya. :D

Best Regards,
Dale

The Swedish engine manufacturer.

The cloak of anonymity tends to unleash tremendous wit.

The Folan 72 hp fire extinguisher features DOHC. They used Husabergs cylinders and heads in the past, if I'm not totally misinformed. That makes me wonder if Folan made their own new DOHC heads and that Highlander inherited them. Or is it the other way around? A secret cooperation perhaps? Or two totally independent developments to DOHC from the Husaberg Husqvarna type head? Or did Folan get Husaberg heads with DOHC that KTM would not let them use before RFS got the feature, provided they they never got close to a motorcycle? How many men would it take to take control of the hose when the 72 hp Folan power is unleashed? Brevity is the soul of wit (William Shakespeare), so I guess I just blew it.
One thing highly appreciated at this forum is the great sense of humour that everyone shows.

Thinking back to the first Folan engine for which I came in contact pre dates the rise of Husaberg. :?

Husqvarna, Maely, Husaberg, Folan, Highland, Vor, Vertemati, KTM, Cannondale and Godden have all been influenced by the genius of Urban Larsson. :D

Indeed, chicken or egg. Which does come first?

PS
Highland is Folan from the ashes of bankruptcy.
