Here's the story, I just bought a 05 FE 550 from a guy that bought it left over last May. Been doing more resurch since I got it and have been reading alot about bearing failures on this model. It has 421 miles on the speedo and looks brand new. He's kept a log of the oil cahanges and valve adj, he said he last change the oil at 419 miles. Today I droped the oil because it did'nt look right in the site window. It's real dark gray the drain pulg had black crap stuck to it but no metal particles and none in the screen. Do you think this is just from the newness of the engine or the bearing failure? Keep it or sell it? I don't want to be putting several thousand in a rebuild.

Sounds perfectly fine to me. There will always be a little residue on the plug magnet. Haven't heard of any main bearing problems here in the U.S. although the boys down under seemed to have experienced some. Not sure why. Constant flogging in deep sand maybe? Your motor is just getting broke-in. I'd say go out and have fun riding!

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Just bothered me that he just change the oil(not the filter) and it was so dark already.

I have just bought one to, an 06 fe550 with a motard kit. It was a steal and is in flawless condition, just had a full rebuild and all. I have hears similar stories and am a little concerned. Can you guys tell me what the best maintainece regime is? I do 99% road riding, most of it for short reasonably hard rides but once every two weeks i will ride it for 2 hours on the highway (one either way with a long break in-between). Is it possible with good maintainence regarding fluids, filters etc and a valve adjustment every when necissary, to not need to pull the motor down say, once a year? what fluids should I run? I know to only use mineral clutch oil but thats all so far (iv'e only had it 3 days!)

I think you have to keep it up,because in new market there are no value of second hand vehicle and already say
it looks like brand new,so you have to maintain it and use with care,in future you will find more trouble of maintanance
than you can sale it,if you get reasonable value of your vehicle than ,in future you will sale it,but still you have to keep that things

First of all I would like to welcome the new members to the group. Congratulations, you have purchased a high performance enduro weapon, as such maintenence is crucial. It would pay to peruse this http://www.husaberg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page and this if you have a moment to spare viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6195 altenativley you could just say :cuss: it and ride the :cuss: . +1 logjump maybe the coriolis effect is to blame.
