Did a re-grease & check on my head stem bearings a week or so ago, managed to hold the forks and pack grease into the bottom bearings and do the top bearing / whack a bit of extra grease into the head yube for good measure, so didnt actually remove the whole box and dice.

once I had it back together, with the tension nut on & had a chance to look over it, looking down the inside of the hollow head stem bolt, it appearde that there were slots on each side about half way along.

would this allow a quick shot of grease from the top (under the top clamp dome nut) to push some fresh grease into the steering head bearings?

havent done the swing arm axle yet, but noting that it appears to be hollow with plastic stopper caps in each end, could the same apply for the swing arm pivot greasing?

Ive had a fair crack at the doc, and it doesent appear that there is anythin like this, maybe someone else has seen what I'm talking about on an '05 or later model. (maybe i'm mistaken, it was 1am when I did the steering head).

Hi Azza,

My guess is you spotted the slot for the steering head lock. On my old IT490 and 250 I installed a couple of grease nipples into the head stem and gave them a shot occasionaly. These days I do what you did. I have found on other bikes in the past with grease nipples in linkages that the fresh grease doesn't always get to the entire bearing, it just finds the easy way out so now I prefer to pull it all apart once a year and lube everything.

I put grease between seals and bearings too, especially wheels. My theory being that you may not need a lot of grease to lube it, but the more grease between the bearing and the outside, the harder it is for contaminants to get in there and do damage.

Cheers
Steve

Yeah agree totaly with the more grease theory. reflecting on what I wanted to do - it is probably better to disasemble the swing arm shaft particularly, it would insure no lock up between bearings and shaft occurs without being noticed.

Cheers!

my 97 frame had grease nipples all over the rear linkage and drilled into the head tube on the frame and despite the head tube being full of grease all the bearings were still shot! i guess the new grease just cant push the water out unless its actualy being pumped tru the bearing itself
