Gearing my FE 570

Gentleman, I broke my own rule, I responded to negative commentary. I suggest we all ignore it
and continue to benefit from each others experience...

that's enough your all in for a sex change on Monday.

Lol (as they say...)

Taffy

Taffy, are you going to let me post riding impressions on my new 48 tooth rear sprocket, or is that going to make you unhappy? I don't want to piss you off, I really don't.

ah shucks its no fun when nobody sees the fun in it anymore....

you go ahead mate!

regards

Taffy

Thanks, Taff. Hey, fun is my middle name.

OK, I'll make this short. My 2011 FE570S came with a 14 tooth front sprocket and a 42 tooth rear sprocket. That's a final drive ratio of 3.00. With that combination I couldn't use 6th gear below 50 mph, and the bike would logically go over 100 mph. It would not crawl up a grade at low speed and would die if you didn't gas it. I have no racer pretentions, and that made for a ride that I wasn't enjoying very much.

I bought a 48 tooth Husaberg Stealth sprocket from HusabergParts.com. It has a blue anodized alloy center and a ring of steel teeth rivited to it. It's a beautiful part. The question was whether the original factory chain would work with the longer sprocket, and the answer to that was no - it was one link too short.

The result is a considerably more tractable machine. The final drive ratio is 3.46. I can use 6th gear at 45 mph without lugging the engine, the machine will crawl at 5 to 6 mph, and throttle response is nothing short of outstanding. It has changed the character of the machine, making it much more responsive and much more fun to ride. No regrets, even though I had to replace a chain with only 360 miles on it.

Ruger- How big do you think you can go on the rear sprocket keeping the front 14T and the stock chain? I saw Renthal makes a 45, 46 and 47

I was a full link shy with the change from 42 to 48. It might take the 45, but that gearing change probably isn't worth the trouble.

I like all the gearing talk as I am considering trying something different. My stock 09 came with 13/52. Over all I just love the bike in general. I did put a street kit on it and the gearing is not ideal for the street. Is there a perfect gearing for 70% dirt,30% street?

09berg, there is absolutely, positively, absolutely, indubitably no such thing as "perfect gearing" or anything remotely akin to it, let alone for some percentage of street vs. off-road. Your 13/52 is one of the more acclaimed off-road combinations, and equates to a final drive ratio of 4.00. It's probably too low for street use, especially as much as 30%.

The 2011 models are delivered with a 14/42 combination, which equates to 3.00. Your sweet spot will be somewhere inbetween. You might start with a 14 tooth front sprocket. That, with your 52T rear, will give you a final drive ratio of 3.71, and will slow chain wear a bit. It's a low cost solution, would almost certainly not require the replacement of the existing chain, and might be worth a try.

Thanks for the info Ruger. I am going to try the 14 on the front sugestion. Its cheap and will be interesting to feel the difference. I am on the street more than dirt this time of year because there is still too much snow in the hills. 14/52 in the spring, then when the snow melts, back to 13/52 sounds like a good plan.

Sure thing. Here's a little spreadsheet to help eliminate the guesswork.

I'm running 13/52 with a 116 link chain and find it ideal for offroad with enough pep in 1st gear to hop over logs etc. while still retaining a comfortable 60mph cruising speed for road work. Can't remember what road gearing the bike came with but 15/42 sounds about right.

13/52 all day for me too but did you ever run it with 118 links before going to 116 ? Thought stock was 118, as per the old one I took off, and noticed it starts a good way back in the swing arm when fitting a new chainset this weekend.
