I am sure this has been discussed, however I would like some gearing advice, I have a 2011 FE570 and my 1st gear seems high for my single track, hills and general rough stuff. I have not counted the teeth on my stock sprockets I would guess maybe a 15/42 setup?
What sould I change to to get good low end results? 13/48 will I need to buy a chain also or can I just add a couple of links?
thanks,

I'm running 13/52 with a 116 link chain and find it ideal for offroad with enough pep in 1st gear to hop over logs etc. while still retaining a comfortable 60mph cruising speed for road work. Can't remember what road gearing the bike came with but 15/42 sounds about right.

Tumbleweed,

My guess is your 2011 FE570S came with 14/42 gearing (the 2009 and 2010 models came with 13/52 and a longer chain). I initially tried to go to a 14/50 (3,57) combo but the chain was too short. I ended up going to a 13/45 combination (3.46). This seams to work well for me and works with the stock chain. I might also add I like to use the "L" setting on the 70 degree racing map switch for trail work. The L setting seams to get the best traction with a little extra torque on the very low end for getting the front end up over obstacles. Ultimately, your gearing will depend on how tight the trails you ride are.

On my 09 570 I went to 13/50 for open desert work, and dropped back to 13/52 for everything else.

I also tried 14/52 for the desert but it is too tall, not enough snap.

In the end I now just run 13/52 all the time, 1st gear is a good paddling gear over the gnarly stuff, and 6th tapped out will still take you to just about 100 mph.

13/52 all day for me too.

shame they get through so many front sprockets....

I know what you mean...........

I tried going to a 14/53 set up to help with that but it put the rear wheel too far back on the swing arm, and that in turn made the bike not turn as well, not enough bite on the front. So I just went back to the 13/52 and keep a close eye on the front sprocket and replace it as soon as it starts to wear.

Stock gearing on my 2011 FE570S is 14:42 (3.00).
I think I need to gear down, too.
Would rather stick with 14 tooth front sprocket, since the 13 tooth wears fast.
How big can I go with the rear sprocket and still use the factory length chain?
(Trying to keep the cost down.)

See attached spreadsheet.

without being certain but at least 90% I would shove the rear wheel as far forwards as I can and collect the chain up over the sprocket. if I had 2 links 4 links or 6 links I can then work out the biggest sprocket for that chain.

Thanks, Taffy. I love a cheap experiment!

But maybe somebody else has already run the experiment. Has anybody tried a 48 or 49 tooth rear sprocket with the stock chain on a 2011 570?

I tried to use a 50 tooth sprocket (14 front) with the 2011 FE570. I came up at least three links short (I didn't flip the chain adjusters as some have said). You can add individual links through Husaberg, but these require staking to make the link permanent.

Really? Are both ends of the axle carriers threaded to accept the adjustor bolts?

Just looking at my axle carrier - it looks as if you could turn it around 180 degrees to gain a little more adjustment as the adjustment itself it threaded into the swingarm, not the axle block. I sold the 50 tooth rear so I would be unable to try it. I put on a a 13/45 (3.46 final drive ratio) to get close to the 14/50 (3.57 final drive ratio) mentioned by several magazine tests. Even the 13/45 was a pretty tight fit with the axle block in the stock location. Hope this helps....

I was told when I purcashed my bike that it came stock with 14/45 and we switched out to 13/48 without having to change the chain.

T Stretch,

Is your bike a 2009, 2010, or 2011? The 2009s and 2010s came with 13/52 gearing, the 2011s 14/42 gearing - to the best of my knowledge.

Ruger,

Both Dirt Bike and Dirt Rider did tests on the 2011 FE570S and both experimented with different gearing. I would think you would be able to pull up those articles at their websites.

On a different note, I wanted to ask you about you experience going from a modified ktm style muffler (did you ever actually cut off the full portion of the small restrictive portion of the endcap?) vs your FMF 4.1. What was the change in power and noise. If there was a power increase, in what portion of the rpm range was it noted most.

Regards,

Thomas

Thanks, Thomas, I'll see if I can find those articles.

I never did actually cut off the smaller tube altogether, but I did everything but. It made it sound a little better and it didn't retain as much heat in the exhaust tract (easier on the inside of the right thigh), but I never noticed a performance difference.

Upon close examination, I can see where turning the chain adjustor blocks around will indeed provide greater adjustment range for a larger sprocket. In fact, it appears that the blocks are intentionally designed with that in mind. It's hard to tell how many chain links it's worth, though. I'm going to stick with the 14 tooth front sprocket, and go with either a 48 or 49 tooth rear. If reversing the chain adjustor blocks isn't enough, I'll get a set of these:

you know when the LDC bikes came out in 2008 we laughed at the amount of gearing threads that were started. :D :D

the expression: "does my bum look big in this often came to mind"....

Count that front sprocket again. The 2011s came from the factory with 14 tooth front sprockets.
