they wear in 2 places. firstly on the end that rubs in the crankcase and secondly, on the sharp 'elbows' on the drum. they take the inside corners off.

Thanks Taffy. I noticed that small round wear inside the corners but I think it will work OK because my drum was kind like that in every corner but it was fine (until the fork was damaged). So it will hold some years I guess. Do you have any photo of a new drum to compare?

i think there are some good ones in the doc somewhere.

i may not have said this before but once a gearbox goes - it goes. everyuthing affects something else. so worn corners mean worn delectors means missed gears so the dogs wear.

the story goes on.

I ordered the used drum, when the mechanic see it we will decide whether we put it or order a new one. I can always return the old back. Wish me luck!

Well I went to the workshop today to pick up my "ready to run" berg. The mechaninc found the drum and forks almost as new and they fitted just perfect. I took it for a ride and I heard that sound from the gearbox again. I went back, asked him to test it and after a little the bike went "glong" again! He had to remove the chain to come back to the workshop. So, if not the forks.... something else is doing it. But what?

I know dear Taffy will say "I told you to use new gear" but I think it really is something else.. I saw the drum, its corners were just fine, the wear was so little that there is no way that did the damage again so soon.

Thinking of some bent shaft ?

i'm sorry to hear that. i think he may have got his 3/4th gear on the wrong way round in the box? just a thought. remember - THE BOOK IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!

Taffy

I let him know Taffy, though I think he did not used the book. Shouldn't I or he understand that when we rode the bike?

he doesn't have to have a book. he has the internet!

there is very little to get wrong with the gearbox so here are a few 'crazy' things to look at:

the drum is worn in the r/h cover
he has the star on the drum in the swrong position
the combined 3/4th gear go the other way around compared to the book
the box isn't shimmed correctly - see the doc for joeusa's cure!
axial float
a gear on the wrong way round

this time a few gear teeth were broken. He told me I should find a gearbox... I'm so lost...

............and was it the double gear!!!! was i right!!!!!!

i have a gearbox coming but i'm selling it too a sweaty sock (jock) in the morning. if it falls through i will be having a word with you.

Taffy

think it was taffy, i had not a clear mindto ask for details, i was in shock! must have been though, because it stuck with the 4th in. Almost killed my mechanic then!

surely the whole "gearbox" cant be spent? maybe a selector drum or a fork but not the whole lot? i doubt the bearings will be to good with the water for lubrication but i would expect a couple of obviously worn parts are your main problem.
