okay so maybe i panicked, heres the story;
my 08 FE550e has about 100hrs on it and 2k miles of offroad use. lately as the hours have piled on i have been increasingly aware that this thing could grenade at any time(if you beleive the horror stories), so was upset but not supprised when about a month ago i started getting more than the usual fuzz on the sump magnet. I monitored the particulates over the next few oil changes and they appeared to be getting increasingly exspensive, at the last change of only about two hours use the magnet picked up more shrapnel than a D day landing craft. it was at this point i convinced myself that the engine was junk so i ripped her to bits to find?
Absolutly nowt,
mains, cam chain, balance shaft bearings, are all perfect.
the balance shaft drive bearing is a wee bit grumbley but nothing,
gearbox bearings slightly rough but again nothing really,
the only thing is, the 1st gear is starting to wear its dogs at the edges, so that looks like the culprit. funny how a few bits on yer magnet can get you $hitting your self, it probably could have gone another 50 hours to be honest, but hey, prevention is better than cure right? right guys? yeh?......*****.

Prevention is always better than cure !! Least your mind can be put at rest now :)

checking it is always cheaper than breaking it !

Been there done that.
I have come to the conclusion thaty unless there is a noise that comes with the metal or identifiable pieces of debris. Let it be.

i reckon unless its the mains don't worry about it, you can check if they are ok without splitting the cases and the RHS one can be checked by removing only 4 bolts on the stator cover.

the cam train can be checked easy too.

the gearbox metal fragments are usually dull grey like the gears and quite big chunks while any small shiny silver flakes (1mm square or so) are usually from bearings. CFB, camshaft bearings and mains all easy checked. cant check the counterbalncer very easy so remove it :D bronze flakes in my bike were from the clutch slave cylinder bushing.

the gearbox stop discs and snap rings oon the output shaft should be replaced at 100hrs in my bike :( I got some kawasaki clips craigy got the number

kawasaki Part Number 920331098 can get from mototech in australia http://www.mototech.com.au/index.php?pa ... ct=viewCat

hey jockie!

are you starting to hear voices in yer hid?

....ah that'll be husabergs doin it to ya!

regards

Taffy
