Well after a year, most of which was caused by our friends at UPS, I finally got the 501 up and running. Right after I fired it up, I thought to myself, ahhh, I remember that exhaust note!

We were out for the memorial day weekend for the first outing and after cruising around for a 1/2 hour it quit, like someone hit the kill button. I knew by this it was ignition, and since the lower ignition was brand new I suspected the upper. Especially, since I let it set for an hour and it started right up. I let my buddies youngest ride it around the next day and warned him not to go too far from camp as I knew it would quit. He ended up getting towed back a few miles. So I replaced that and went out to the I-5 MX last thursday for a track day. Well, after my first stint of 1hour and 45 minutes I was pretty convinced that, as Cluseau would say, "the case, she is sol-ved".

The bike ran great with the exception of a bit of roughnes at low rpm which is probably a rich condition brought on by the quiet core in my Big Gun exhaust. So, next I will try dropping the needle one notch and see if that doesn't clean it up a bit.

It sure was nice getting the old girl running again. She took me to a few victories and a very low class number a couple of years back. And, nice to have another Husaberg in the garage!! :D :D

Let us know about your electrical issues. You are not the only one 8)

I have the exact same bike and I managed to have my first real ride with it, on some pretty easy stuff, Sunday morning.

Even with all their little issues, they remain awesome bikes to ride.

Starting cold took a bit of time but with confidence and the right amount of effort, it ended up starting (on the button, I have to admit). It restarted on the button all the time, except twice, where I could fix the connection the first time, and then kick start it the second time. And no fall :)

Now my challenge is to show up at every group ride with a bike that is very clean, well maintained, does not leak and does not lose a connection.

It's not a challenge, it's an obligation.

Good thing you brought this bike back to life. Enough bergs parted out already.

Thanks for the post LeFrog.

The only problem I have with it right now is that I can't get it to start on the button, which was never a problem in the past. I'm suspecting either a) bad switch at the bars, b) bad solenoid, c) I didn't clean the ground surface when I re-assembled it, or, d) I didn't keep enough of a charge on the battery for the year it was out of the bike.

I have some heavier gauge wire and some lugs and am going to ground it the way the 04 is grounded, right on the starter motor mount.

One thing I forgot to mention in the first post is that the replacement iginitions do not have the HI/LO capability anymore. IE when I got the new one, it had one less wire than the old one. Luckily the 01 owners manual had a wiring diagram in the back and I was able to figure out what the missing wire was. I was a little bummed b/c I usually left it in the low postion for the technical stuff, and only used HI in the deep sand type stuff.

And yes, you are quite right, they are awesome bikes to ride. And really, once you get them sorted they start really easy. After I installed the new ignition the bike fired right up, like second kick.

But hey, it's still pretty new and maybe with a few more hours things will loosen up a bit and the button start will no longer be an issue. I'll post after I have updated the ground.

Hi guys,

I think a bad e-starting is not a eletrical but more a mechanical problem.
But first of all make sure your battery is fully loaded. If it has a lack of power the relais makes this typical sound (click)

Do you hear the solenoid click when you push the button?

Yeah, but it acts like it's maybe making bad contact at the switch on the bars. I'm thinking since the HI/LO switch doesn't matter anymore I may just change it to the single button like my 04 has.

It can also be a connection problem. I had it Sunday on the trail and before. Worked on my connections, starter worked ok. Rode the bike, after 1 hour the vibrations had damaged the connections. Moved the cables around, until I could start on the button. At the next stop, no go, even after playing with the cables, which means a cable is now cut.

I am going to redo the connections and change all the cables that need to be changed. I wonder if the connectors from the new bikes would work?
