this quote was from an ad on gumtree ,, i find it quite fitting

"Two Lada nivas have to go. The original Russian Beetroot Harvester!!

Bought these to make one good goer but ran out of enthusiasm. Theres two engines and one gearbox and one transfer case. Majority of parts removed from either are stored inside car. Will be crushed next time scrap merchant comes past if not sold.

Discover for your self the intricacies of Russian engineering and understand why they never quite made it to the moon !"

yes its quite a good little rig Steve ... for a 70s design.

very good results in the dakar as well

the carb bowl being in front of the intake throats means it floods real bad on steep hills .. common problem for off roading carbed engines, they went to efi about 96

i lowered the fuel level, fitted a T piece in the pressure side of the fuel line to return excess pressure to the tank, smaller jets, blocked the secondary enrichment passage and put in a new overflow in a different position more like a bike carb. works ok now for what i need it to do.

We had one as the family fourby when I was a kid... damn thing went everywhere and we couldn't kill it no matter how hard we tried. Drove down the eastern beach of fraser island one day with a cyclone looming off shore, a rogue wave charged up the beach and picked the whole car up with us inside and shifted us about 3 metres closer to the dunes. Bloody niva came out the other side still running like nothing ever happened!

Best thing is, lada parts australia have lots of spares for them & are damn cheap too.

Lada Jetting Weber style carb

hooked up my WEGO to the beetroot harvester and fiddled with the holes in brass things, it was so rich stock it blew more black smoke than a deisel

for the benefit of internet users with the same rig: ie me when i need to find where i wrote the numbers :D

the carb is the OEM one that looks like a webber copy

Original_VAZ_carby.jpg

exhaust system doesn't have the rear muffler only the small mid one and the cat converter, timing 3 deg BTC at idle ass per manual

primary main 112, air jet 150

secondary main 110, air jet 170

idle 50, pilot 60

float 7-7.5mm, ap nozzle 40, secondary enrichment passage is blocked

AFR at idle is 14.

12-13 while operating on the primary and with the secondary open and above 4000 its 11.5-12

to get it to go up proper hills without flooding i put a T in the fuel pressure line and ran it back to the tank via the breather hose, also re routed the carb "Vent" hose so it goes straight down instead of up and over the engine.

main issue is that with the carb bowl in front of the throaghts, going up a hill lets the fuel spill into the engine.

on other carbed ofroaders i have had to put in an overflow port just above the fuel level and as far back (close to the throats) as possible

Here's an interesting one - Yamaha WR450F 2-Track. Hydraulic front wheel drive. Apparently four of these turned up here in Iceland for some reason!

Has an Öhlins steering damper. Looks like the reservoir is in an interesting place?

This one's for sale locally. Asking 5400 EUR / 6000 USD. I'd be surprised if it goes for that though.
