My fe 450 with 3000 km and regular servicing has the following problem:
- bike starts well cold and warm. in low revs or nearly closed throttle the bike smothers.
cleaned the carb and jets but it keeps the same.
friend of my told that maybe the new fuel types give a residue on the jets and therefor bad idling.
Could it be that the Pilot Jet is become "smaller" by this effect ?

smothering isn't a word we'd use so erik i'm not sure what you are saying?

would it be a 'flat spot' or a 'delay' or a 'stumble'?

Taffy

Hello Mr taff meister
that's a quick reply !
it's more a delay. But the bike does not pick up revs and whooooh.... stops running.
This morning i cleaned the carb again. mainjet is 185. pj is 45.
idle screw 1,5 out.
The problem looks to me it's a lean mixture in low workarea of the carb.
The first time i got the problem it was with wet and cold morning with 4 dgr celsius.
I guess air/ fuel mixture to idle.
i go to idle crew 1.75 out or more ? pj is quite big.

Erik,

Have you read the owners Doc? Taffy put a lot of work into that, and there is a good bit there about jetting and tuning. Specifically how to set you pilot screw. Also please read about the relationship of the pilot air jet and the pilot jet.

Taffy also makes a jetting kit for your bike that by all accounts that I have heard makes the bike run very well.

How about some more information?
Where do you live?
Elevation?
How many hours on the bike?
Did you buy it new or used?
What needle do you have?
What clip position is it on?

OK :

Where do you live? holland.
Elevation? below sea level (we got dikes, both of them)
How many hours on the bike? 81 hours
Did you buy it new or used? new
What needle do you have? OBDV R
What clip position is it on? clip 5 from above

I read the information from Taffy.
always thought my jetting was too rich but my dealer says i should mount a bigger mainjet ( 190).
Never had any problem with the carburation.

then your dealer is on some good shag!

tell him to take some more and jump in a **** (one of the kind - the cold and wet type)

i'm still getting over the one egbert streur's brother rolled for me in 1989!

regards

Taffy
