Before I got married the dishwasher was a great parts washer. After boring the cylinder a good run through the dishwasher insured that no metal flakes were present .
And don't forget the countless times powdercoating things in the kitchen oven when the other half isn't around. And if you get caught, they ask you what your cooking! Try explaining that what is in the oven is not edible.
I've got a mate who regularly puts revolver cylinders & barrels through the dishwasher in with the cutlery - with his missus's blessing. With stainless guns he reckons it is the best way to clean 'em.
Putting an engine cylinder in the dishwasher after a hone is not such a bad idea. A few years ago Caterpillar recommended cleaning cylinders with non-abrasive hand cleaner until no colour appeared when wiped with white paper towel.
