hey, im Gøran and im new here. i just bought a husaberg fe 650 and i love the bike, but i have one problem.

i didnt notice it at first. but the bike gets engine oil from the engine breather hose. this only happends when i drive it hard or does max speed, after i go max speed i notice straight away that the engine is burning oil because i can feel the spark plug having a hard time igniting it. at first i tought it was filter oil so i cleaned the inlet manifold and the inside of the frame for oil and changed the spark plug. then i rode maybe 80 km and then i found a big flat so i took it up to 180 kmh and after i let go of the throttle i immediately felt it bogging and burning oil.

i know its from the breather hose, the question is why ? the oil filters are completely clean, no metal debrids or anything. and there are no weird noises either.

so, engine oil up breather hose. only problem whatsoever is that the oil makes the bike bogg and run unsmoothly when i try to keep it at a steady pace of about 110-115kmh.

please help me !

what year 650? does it still have the foam plug in the top of the breather tube? run a 650 hard and you will use oil

its a 2007, i cant see any foam plug. i get that people are saying that, but is it supposed to be this bad ? it makes my bike bogg whenever i try riding steady ! i cleaned the inside of the frame and inlet manifold. and then it runs smooth all untill i go to 170+ then it starts bogging because theres a pool of oil inside my inlet manifold between the frame and carburettor :s

im gonna check if the filter is there and what condition its in, i found it in the spare parts book. any other suggestions to why this is happening?

ok, so i checked that foam filter and it was there and in good condition.

isnt this much engine oil trough the crankcase ventilation a sign of something bad ? im surprised the only problem im feeling is that the spark plug doesnt like the oil

one thing you can try is to block off the rear tube at the bottom. make a plug for it that fits inside the vent tube. using just the front like the pre-04 bikes is adequate ventilation and you eliminate the cam chain rotation throwing oil up the tube.

thanks for the tip, is this a common problem with the 650 ? and you dont think that this is a sign of something wrong that i gotta fix ?

i heard some saying that if your piston rings are worn this can happend because of the compression going past the rings and down to the crank ?

i dont think something like that is wrong with mine since i cant hear any weird noises and the oil filtre is clean

i just read on another forum that this one guy use to fill 8DL of oil instead of 1L and if he fills 1L he gets oil into hes filter box, maybe its as simple as that cause i filled 1L and was told this was the right amount xD

Be careful with oil measurements, i always get it wrong.

When you drain oil (without filter change) theres still a lot of oil left in the engine. So only put around 800ml in, that way you'll have just under a litre in the engine.

Slightly less oil is better than too much apparantly

hmm, ok. i drained it now without taking the oil filtre out. and put 800ml back in. havent dared to test it hard yet, is 800ml the right amount ? it shows about half of the inspection glass when its standing still, and when i start it up it goes closer to the upper half maybe 1/3rd left. am i safe ? xD

earlier it was very hard to get in neutral. now its easier :p

Thats the perfect amount.

Oil when cold should be just showing at bottom of window, and be at upper level when warm.

If youve been puttin a litre in, especially with no filter change, youve put way too much in.

You probably had around 1.2litres in, that mighta been the problem

hmm, so if i change filter while the oil plug is still out theres gonna come more oil out ? i always take the oil filter out to have a look at it, and so did i last time and filled 1L wich turned out to be too much.

when i drain the oil i tilt the bike to the side to get as much as possible out.

im abit scared to ride when i only filled 8DL. even tough it shows half the inspectionglass.

Yeah, theres always quite a bit that you can never get out. Some people kick it over a few times to get more out.

If you take the oil filter out you might have to put around 850mls in

Im always a bit dubious about putting 800ml in, it seems so little, but as long as its right in the oil window, then its ok. Theres also some valve gubbins, not sure what its called, and it sometimes stops the oil level in the window being accurate.

I took advice from Dave Clarke, he said start it up for a few seconds - so it doesnt get too hot, switch it off then check oil level window, and it should be just showing at the bottom. He said i'd been putting too much in 8O

Mine has never ran better since i used this method, just gotta keep an eye on the oil level, but it never uses any between changes.

allrighty, so i took it out for a proper ride, it still boggs a bit but im sure thats just the spark plug thats still oily, after i rode a while i cleaned the inside of the frame properly to see if any oil at all came in on the way home, and the answer to that was little or nothing. so i guess i fixed the problem, ill try to clean my spark plug tomorrow, if that doesnt help im just gonna get a new one xD

I believe it was determined that cold oil should be at the bottom of the glass and hot to the middle of the glass
I think oil near the top of the glass when hot would be a little too much.
I have only had a problem with the breather once on any of my Husabergs. That's when I had the bike tipped
on its left side for a minute. It was even a little upside down. It smoked for 10 minutes and cleared out.
When I do an oil change I just make sure its showing at the bottom of the glass. No more than 1/4 up the glass.
I will then check it on a cold morning before a ride to make sure its there.
That usually puts it at 1/2 the glass when hot.

i tought everything was fine, but it turns out its still spitting oil, it has done 156 hours, and a local workshop tells me that its a sign of worn piston and or piston rings, wich was my ultimate fear xD but i guess i just gotta deal with it and change the piston ..

something's not quite right. i would do a lot of testing before jumping into a new piston, etc.
have you decided there is excess blowby coming from the vent? if the tube leading to the carb is now free of oil, and there is no excess smoking on accel (rings) or decel (valve guides), have you looked into carb settings, jetting?

i cleansed the inside of the frame, and i have the right amount of oil, but after one really hard ride with high speed theres oil everywhere and a little pool in the manifold, im gonna get a compression gauge to check the compression before i do anything.

reroute the breather hose. plug the rear port on the head, plug the hole inside the big hole on the frame, run a piece of heater hose (5/8?) from the front port up and over the underside of the frame just in front of where it used to connect to the frame tube and down as far as esthetically possible. secure it to something (i ziptied it to the lower rad hose). make a dirt filter for the end of the hose to suit you. (i use steel wool jammed up into the tube)
if you're concerned about how much oil will come out, use a small catch can about the size of a small tomato juice can and inspect it after a run.
i did this to my '02 650 expecting to see massive quantities of oil in the can...never got anything.
