clutch hub question

there's a lot of differences: early is held on by a clip, disc engagement is gear type, late is held on by torqued nut, and disc engagement is by roll pin. it depends on why you want to do it.

A acquaintance of mine has a 2001 550 and all of the threads in the inner clutch hub for the springs are stripped. So he needs a new one and i have one from my bike because of the STM slipper clutch.

i dont think it will the 02 and earlier clutches are different to the 04 and onwards with the 03 being a halfway house between the two, or so it seems when i was doing some research for my '03 400.

if you've got the basket there get him to strip his out and you'll have the answer.

get a 1/4-20 tap and change the threads and bolts. 1/4" is 6.4 mm.

lets get this one sorted for the record (i haven't looked in the doc). this is a guess as i don't study clutches.
'02 was teeth and a circlip
'03 was tube and circlip
'04 was tube and lock nut

they then changed it again in '07 i think and again in''08 and i think that was about it.
i have noticed that the outer steel is about 1mm from popping off the drum completely on the '04-'06s so i'm guessing that making the pressure plate stronger and the drum deeper was all part of those changes.

this is all from memory. could spend an hour on it but i can't be arsed.

tell your mate to get a thread repair kit, with some stainless steel threads in there it'll be better then before :D

went through this yesterday and what I found was that if you want to upgrade your earlier clutch you can. the '02 clutch has a thin washer between the basket and the drum and a flat back to the drum. this brings the drum up nicely to the point where the circlip is added.

however, the '03 has a pair of 'C' washers that slot into the gearbox shaft and they get capped by a cupped washer that keeps them in. the '03 hub therefore has a recess in the back of the drum for this thicker set up. after this it is just the same as far as fitting goes.

the next difference is that the teeth on the drum are taller on the later clutch whilst shorter on the basket teeth. the later basket has teeth like a 'pitch fork' while the earlier basket has teeth that have a circular drilled hole in them.

to fit the '03 tubes drum appears as i say to be easy and all the plates fitted spot on in a mock exercise. however, like all the later clutches, the last friction seems to come really close to the top of the basket's teeth.

I expect I'll try and do an upgrade and see how i get on....
