I think the difference between the gear here could be down to the carbs?
Are any of you 13th front blokes running an FCR?
I`am still useing the original carb. but I don`t think it would make much difference.Where I ride is generally steep, narrow where you have to pick your way.Granted alot of it may be carb related. Also I use this size sprocket to help on engine braking down same said steep places.I also use it to keep the engine from stalling on same said steep places.Part of it may be carb related but another is riding style.I have not yet seen what my bike will do yet with the new engine so that part will be a wait and see.Take care and keep the rubberside down.

Hi guys,

I would prefer sprockets 14/52.
For the 400ccm enginge you surely need a short gear ratio.
I had a 2000 FE 400 and with 14/50 it ran really well.
The 03 model has not the same power as the 2000 model, so I would
say 14/52 is the right way. In my opinion 13 teeth at the front sprocket is a bit too small, because of wear and tear. But I see, some members here ride with a 13 for years.
Another topic: I have also a Keihin FCR on my 501. Engine runs very well but it starts not too easy. When cold I have to kick a lot of times and hot it doesn´t start very often with the electric starter, but by kicking it starts immediately after 1 or 2 kicks. I will try another setup but dont know which jets I have to use. Has anybody ideas? Please let me know.
