camshaft alignments on various years?

DuaneB said:
I just installed a new "08" camshaft in my 2002 FC550. It originally had a "53" camshaft in it.

I compared the two very carefully before installing and noticed that the 08 cam was about 1.5mm shorter in overall length than the 53 cam. I installed the cam against the right side of the engine which put the lobes in the correct place, then I was left with about a 1.5mm gap between the cam bearing and the plug on the right side of the engine. I found an appropriate sized washer and installed it between the plug and the cam bearing to prevent the cam from walking sideways in the head. This positioned the lobes perfectly, and the cam sprocket is VERY close to where it should be, but it might be as much as 0.5 mm closer to the center of the engine.

Has anyone else encountered this? I could make a shim to place under the camshaft sprocket but just wondering what everyone else has done.

if you take the w/p shaft off the pre 2001s you'll find that the 2 lobes are nearer the sprocket carrier by about 1.5mm than the 2001-2003s. so to get it right I have had plates made to go behind the sprocket while at the same time having to skim the boss of the cam to allow the later ADC to be used.

then it would seem later Duane, they did what you say. It's hard to be accurate because the 650 got the 08 cam in 2003 and it's hard to find a genuine bike still....

Interesting stuff sparks is your encapsulation compound a high temp epoxy ?

the intake closing point isn't all that different to the 08 or the x-2 so bottom end should be nice in theory, in practice we will have to see

weed or "pop up" had the same issue with the slide he did post some pics can't find them right now.....

should be firing it up tomorrow, lots went on this time will update my 700 thread soon.

regarding the sprocket alignment If I did it again I would also alter the cb sprocket so that some alignment is done at the bottom, the cam tensioner doesn't push in the middle of the slider so anything that can be done to move the slider toward the piston rather than away from it is good.
