camchain tensioner spring

i always remember a springbok road racer named kork ballington. he won 2 x 2 world titles around 78 and 79 on his 250 and 350 kwacker tandem twins.

his brother was his mechanic and his nik was "DOZY" ballington. they reckoned he could look at anything and lathargically say 'yeh' or 'nah' to anything. always loved that story!

'yeh' it'll work.

Heck, you could cut a bunch of different length springs, then change them out as the chain wears. That way you'll have apples to apples the whole life of the chain. :D

ok i am just about to change the chain on my 04 450. It had two clicks left when i checked it 10 hours ago. This is a topic i am interested in, but feel cautious of as well, if the chain doesn't have enough tension, and it slips, will the valves hit the top of the piston.

Basically what your saying is before i change the chain i should push the tensioner in with the existing spring, to its current worn position, then cut off what is left outside the housing.I suppose this does make sense as it is the minimum tension required to tension the chain to the right level.

Sparks, is this what you have done, and how many ours has your engine done since you have done this.

not really, the spring should be able to push for ever. to cut it off level with the housing means that at this stage with your next chain the spring would stop pushing and that isn't what has been said.

as i say: 50 down to 12 and now it's 30mm long so i still have 18mm of push left and if i need that i'll sit down and sob!

i've just done two engines where the knob sticks out by just 6 and 0 clicks on nearly new chain. 6 clicks = 12mm spring space and 0 cicks mean 50mm down to what??? 8mm

i'm going to drag up that thing about tensioner blades again now!

Hi Squizz,

With the tentioner off I pushed the spring inside the tentioner till there were no adjustment clicks left, left about 10mm of the spring sticking out and lopped off the rest.
A current I have 65 Hours.
I'm going to take it to 4000 miles before I recheck it about 500 to go. The new chain had 7 clicks so I'll see how it done shortly, will post my results on here.

Regards

Sparks.
