My 650 has sat in the garage for a while with old gas in the tank. I drained the tank and want to clean out the carb. What's the best way to clean it out without pulling it out of the bike?

Thanks,

Mike

I was just about to say here in the UK you can pick up ultrasonic cleaning baths for ~£30 and really do a good job. But cleaning in the frame... not sure, I ve jut got my 1st berg so have yet to look into it.

I think if you turned the petcocks off, then what's in the bowl evaporates, the process stops there, and you won't end up with a lot of residue. I'll know soon!

But if you leave the gas valves on, then the bowl can just keep filling, evaporating, filling etc., and you could have some varnish built up.

I'd try running sea foam through it, maybe even put some in full strength, let it sit awhile, drain it out of the float bowl, then put fresh gas in.

When you say for "a while" how long does that mean? is it that hard to pull the carb and clean it properly?
does the bike run poorly as it is? you really cant just clean it on the bike properly, i would think all you could do is add sea foam or fuel system treatment/cleaner (as recomended on the can) to the next full tank off fresh fuel. if its not running right because the old gas is gunked up already then it would be a waste of time to clean it when on the bike. to try and soak it when on the bike and blow it out on the bike, to do even a semi good clean you would have more time screwing aroung taking the bowl off and fighting yourself doing a poor job than the amount of time it would take to just do it properly and remove it. i would say if it runs ok on new gas then just add a treatment to the next couple of tanks of fuel, be glad it isnt gunked, and take it as a lesson to drain your fuel from the bowl before you store it and/or add a fuel stabilizer and/or start it periodically to keep things circulating.
You can always start it up, let it run for a minute or two then revv its teets off hey Taff?

Thanks for the tips guys. I don't think its gummed up too bad. I need to fix my weep hole leak and put the clutch cover back on before I can start it. I'll run some sea foam through it and see what happens.
