I had my new rims anodized on my 03 501, and upon relacing I noticed that the spokes were random lengths. Took the rims and hubs to the local shop to be trued, some spokes have no threads showing and others have almost all the threads showing. Does anybody have any ideas what the issues are here?

If the rim is now true and the wheel is concentric I would venture a guess and say that some of the spokes are stretched. This is a completely normal phenonmenon after retorquing time and time again. There are spoke torque wrenches out there if you want to be sure that you are not overtightening them. If you replaced some spokes with new ones when you installed the new rim this could explain the major differences in spoke length. Its a good idea to use antiseize on the spoke threads so that the corrosion that develops quite rapidly it seems is kept at bay for a while. Also a dab of silicone sealer on the top of the spoke nipple helps to seal them a bit.

Thanks for the reply. The spokes and rims were new, so they should of only been stretched once before. The guy that trued them was worried because some of the spokes only had a couple of threads on the nipple. I have checked them and none have loosened up so far. EuroEnduro

I've laced several wheels and they all had 2 different spokes. You should have had two different length spokes. Did you disassemble the wheels yourself? You would have seen there is a lacing pattern to follow; alternating between short spokes and long spokes. If the spoke only has a couple threads into the nipple, then the spokes are not in the correct sequence.

Splat, the front spokes were two different lenghts, but the back spokes were random lengths. Most of the spokes threaded okay. Thats why I cant make any logical conclusion as to why just a few had this problem.

I do positively know that the 01 470 rear wheel uses all the same length and type of spokes.

Guys,
From the factory 2 different length and angle spokes used to get the "offset" of the rim correct. When de-lacing a wheel to do nothing more than change a rim or anodise it is a good idea to leave the spokes in the hub. If you are going to remove the spokes all together then you need to seperate them into groups with an attached note identifying the side that thet came from. You will also note that the angle at the bottom of the spoke is different depending on the a back or forward angle and left vs right. If they are assembled incorrectly you may/will run into problems with the spokes continulally coming loose as they settle in or in the worst case they will break. Lacing wheels is a black art when dismantling/reassembling a wheel that has been in service for some time. For the people that are now consulting the parts manual and noting that there is only one spoke listed, this is correct. The longer spoke is the aftersales option. The factory does not have the time to lace a wheel then grind the protruding spoke down.

Hallo!

I bought a couple of new spokes the other day, and as the reply above says they were longer than the one to replace...

Can I use it as it is or do I have to cut it down to the same length as the old one?
The spoke I bought was, for all I know, for the right year and modell.

Any experience on this anyone?
